1950s Metales Casados Mixed-Metal Pre-Hispanic Necklace w/ Crushed Emerald Inlay

By Los Castillo

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A striking and highly collectible Pre-Hispanic–style necklace designed and manufactured in Mexico in the 1950s by the renowned workshop Metales Casados. Crafted in a sophisticated blend of copper, brass, and silver accents, the pendant features a dynamic figural motif inspired by ancient Mesoamerican iconography, enriched with shimmering crushed emerald inlay. The handcrafted chain showcases bold geometric links characteristic of mid-century Mexican design, while the large pendant combines layered metals and stone inlay with remarkable precision. The piece embodies the signature style of Metales Casados, known for their fusion of contrasting metals (“metals married together”) and their deep appreciation for Indigenous aesthetics. The necklace retains its full hallmark: “Metales Casados, Hecho en México.” A superb addition for collectors of Mexican modernist jewelry...

By Los Castillo

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Magnificent sterling silver cuff bracelet designed and handcrafted by Antonio Castillo for Los Castillo, circa 1950s, in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico. This exquisite piece exemplifies the renowned Mosaico Azteca line, a signature design language of Los Castillo that revived pre-Columbian mosaic artistry through modern silversmithing. The bracelet features an elegant undulating scroll motif inlaid with a mosaic of azurite and lapis lazuli, capturing deep blues and verdant greens reminiscent of Mexico’s natural landscape and ancient artistic heritage. Stamped “Los Castillo, Taxco, Sterling, Made in Mexico, Mosaico Azteca, 147”, this work exemplifies the studio’s commitment to technical mastery and cultural preservation. Antonio Castillo (1911–2000), a former apprentice of William Spratling, went on to become one of the foremost figures in Mexican modernist metalwork. After co-founding Los Castillo in 1939 with his brothers, he developed a distinctive style that blended indigenous materials—such as turquoise, onyx...

This fabulous Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza features Jensen's iconic grape motif, a celebrated range of pieces which were inspired by the Art Nouveau aesthetic coupled with time the artist spent traveling in Italy. Georg Jensen was born in 1866 and trained as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1892. Jensen began his artistic career in ceramics and started working with silver in 1904. He went on to establish his own smithy in Copenhagen and like many others working during the Art Nouveau period, was strongly influenced by natural forms and structure found in flowers and plants. As mentioned above, Jensen spent time in Italy shortly after the turn of the century and developed an appreciation for ancient Roman silver work. He was also struck by the work of more recent Italian artists and was particularly influenced by those pieces which drew upon classical mythology, such as Baroque painter Caravaggio's 'Bacchus'. Jensen combined these influences with emerging Art Nouveau organic motifs, leading him to utilize the malleable qualities of silver to create his renowned Grape Collection. This form of this silver tazza was initially designed by Jensen in 1918. The piece has a round pedestal foot which rises to a thick columnar stem reminiscent of the twisting trunk...
