H & R Daniel Porcelain Teacup, Apple Green with Pink Roses, Rococo Revival C1840
Located in London, GB
This is a rare and beautiful teacup and saucer made by H&R Daniel in about 1840. The set is potted in the "Sutherland" shape and is decorated in an apple green ground with a pink rose in both the cup and the saucer. The H & R Daniel porcelain factory was founded by Henry Daniel, son of a family of master colour makers. He headed up the decoration department in the famous Spode factory where he oversaw all the beautiful early Spode decorations. In 1822 he opened his own factory with his son Richard, creating a truly iconic body of work with the most subtle colours and beautifully painted flowers and landscapes.  The Daniel factory was the last true cottage industry among the English porcelain factories, resisting the increase of industrialisation and mass production. This resulted in extraordinary and unrivalled quality, but it probably also led to the factory having to close its doors in 1846 because it could no longer compete with others who did modernise. Daniel porcelain can be hard to identify as the factory was only around for about two decades, but this short duration and the low output also means that Daniel items have become true collectors' items. This set is potted in the "Sutherland" shape, which was used between 1840 and 1844. The shape is a graceful but rather restrained Rococo Revival style with a generous bell shaped cup. The set is decorated in a very beautiful apple green ground colour with light gilding and beige rim designs, and both pieces have a beautiful hand painted rose in the centre.  The set is unmarked except the faded pattern number 7874, which points to a date of about 1840. CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition without any damage, repairs or crazing, and just some very rubbing as visible in the pictures, mostly on the outside of the cup. Antique British porcelain...

Pair of Patriotic American Eagle Teacups and Saucers, Circa 1840s
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This is a beautifully matched pair of patriotic American eagle teacups and saucers from the 1840s. They are made of bone china with a thick cobalt blue top border design with gold stars, gold outer pinstripes, and a gold top rim edge. They feature a central patriotic American eagle with a red and white shield, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. Fourteen tiny gold stars are positioned above the eagle's head. The eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of the United States. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows in its sinister (left) talon and an olive branch with its dexter (right) talons. Those arrows are tightly aligned, a symbol of "strength in unity" that's found in the traditional cultures everywhere, from the Romans to the Iroquois. In this case, the bundle of arrows were a nod to the unity of the original 13 colonies. The olive branches emphasize the power of peace. The eagle motif has since appeared in allegorical engravings...
