Ancient Greek Cypriot Archaic Horse and Warrior Rider, 700 BC
Ancient Greek Cypriot Archaic Horse and Warrior Rider, 700 BC

Ancient Greek Cypriot Archaic Horse and Warrior Rider, 700 BC

Located in London, GB

An excellent horse and rider figure from the Cypro-Archaic period of Iron Age Cyprus. Dating to around 750-475 BC, this pottery representation survives in a very good state of preservation. The bearded rider is shown holding onto the horse’s stiff mane with both hands. The elaborate painted decoration on the horse has survived in very good condition. The horse has a large head and broad forelock and neck. Both eyes are depicted in relief. The horses spout, ears and top of the head are painted red, as is the rider’s pointed conical helmet. Horizontal red and black bands adorn the neck and forepart of the horse’s body. Vertical black and red bands adorn the back of the horse and the rider’s lower torso. Further traces of black pigment appear on the horse’s tail, which is raised. Albeit stationary, the entire sculpture conveys a rather dynamic, anticipatory pose! An excellent, honest example of an iconic type of ancient Cypriot art...
