WWII Private Theater: Gay American Soldier in Reflection
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
WWII, how are you? Private Theater: Gay American Soldier in Reflection, Original WWII-Era Gouache, Signed CSG A highly nuanced, emotionally layered, and visually accomplished original painting in gouache and watercolor on Whatman drawing board, signed CSG lower right. This rare mid-20th-century work portrays a seated U.S. Army Air Forces officer—smiling faintly, cigarette in hand, and with a small black-bound diary resting on his lap—lost in reverie as smoke from his cigarette rises and transforms into the visages of three idealized male figures. Rendered in an illustrative realist style with tonal sensitivity and surreal suggestion, the composition invites interpretation as an interior portrait of desire, intimacy, and memory—quietly coded, emotionally sincere, and possibly autobiographical. The figure wears a regulation-issue A-2 leather flight jacket, iconic of U.S. Army Air Forces personnel during WWII. The jacket is detailed with a personalized, hand-painted circular patch depicting a lion rampant in a blue roundel—a heraldic symbol of power, pride, and possibly self-invention. An American flag patch is affixed to the left shoulder. The jacket, traditionally worn by bomber crews, officers, and pilots, functions here not only as a marker of military identity but as a gendered and cultural signifier—suggesting the complex intersection of duty, masculinity, and private identity. The slightly open collar, relaxed posture, and cigarette suggest the officer is off-duty—physically grounded but mentally elsewhere. The seated figure’s companions—summoned in smoke—appear above and behind him in a dreamlike procession: a helmeted infantryman, a pilot in goggles, and a hat-wearing civilian (?) man posed in pin-up style. Each face is rendered with tenderness and idealization, not as ghosts or casualties, but as romantic or erotic conquests: remembered lovers, fleeting encounters, or imagined partners. Their expressions, softly lit and emotionally present, reflect a form of desire neither tormented nor tragic. This is not a meditation on loss but on intimacy remembered, perhaps treasured. On the table beside him rests a small bronze Buddha...

Oil on Canvas "the Prohibited Reading" After Karel Ooms
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large Continental Oil on Canvas "The Prohibited Reading " after Karel Ooms (Belgium, 1845-1900). This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time. Signed (l/r) A. Ribas 15-12-913. Within a giltwood carved frame. circa: Probably Belgium, 1913. Karel Ooms was born in Dessel on January 27, 1845 as the youngest son of a large peasant family. At school his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered. When he was twelve his hometown provided financial support which allowed him to study at the Antwerp Academy of fine Arts. One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting and a painter of mainly history paintings and portraits. After graduating from the Academy 1865 Karel Ooms was welcomed with pomp in his home town Dessel. He painted two altarpieces for the local church Saint Nicolas, to express his gratitude to his city. Karel Ooms settled as an independent artist in Antwerp around 1871. He quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter. In addition, he received commissions for religious paintings and history paintings. He gained particular recognition with two large paintings...

Antique Italian Venetian Rococo Carved Painted Gilt Wood 3-Light Hall Lantern
Located in Forney, TX
A most impressive antique Italian Venetian Rococo carved painted parcel gilt wooden hall lantern. Hand carved in the Veneto region (Venice) of Northeast Italy in the 18th / possibly early 19th century, exceptionally executed in the highly ornate, whimsy, light, airy, dramatic splendor that is period late Baroque Rococo style, lavishly ornamented and elaborately sculpted, featuring a large triangular sculptural form enclosing later electrified three faux candle lights, showcasing the original pale pastel green ground adorned with whimsy hand painted polychrome flower motif and ornate giltwood carvings, with beautifully aged patina over the whole. circa 1740-1810 This very large lantern probably graced a sweeping hall or palatial entry of a Venetian aristocratic palazzo decorated with frescoed walls and ceilings, marble floors, surrounded by opulent artwork. Importance / History: For many centuries, the control of artificial light was an important status symbol for people living in most cultures and was an instantly understood sign of wealth and power. Beginning in the early 17th century, grand lanterns such as this were first created and hung in the entrance halls, foyers and/or vestibules of important mansions and manor houses of the aristocratic and affluent classes of Italy, France and Spain. Up until the early 20th century, the entrance hall was considered to be one of the most important spaces in any house. The main reason was that was the most public space in a house, and prior to phones or email, the space into which guests were admitted. Many, such as business people or important tradesmen, seldom went any further into the house. Therefore, that important entryway was designed and decorated with the intent of making the best impression on anyone who might enter it and to ensure they had the highest opinion of the residents of that house. Dimensions: (approx) 32" Tall, 16.75" Wide, 16.75" Deep Condition: Very good antique condition with highly desirable original warm rustic distressed chippy paint patina. Modern lighting and wiring. Lots of antique character and old world European charm, wear consistent with age and use, including scattered minor nicks, losses and exposed gesso adding to the sophisticated whimsical elegance, warmth, and rich antique opulence! Similar to a chandelier / hanging ceiling lamp / monumental pendant light...
