Glorious Late 19th to Early 20th Century Ecclesiastical Religious Art Sacred Heart of Jesus plaster statue sculpture upon a gilded wood base. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, his hands only had the wire structure so new hand-molded & crafted hands were created by our professional craftsmen and the wood on the base was bad so it has been given a new gilded wood base. He has many chips in the plaster that have been repaired and the whole statue has been shellacked. This is an absolutely magnificent Ecclesiastical Religious Art plaster statue of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. He is comprised of hand sculpted and hand painted plaster and he stands about 43 inches tall upon a square flat edge gilded wood base. He has handsome, realistic, intricately hand painted facial features, and his glorious dark brown shoulder length hair drapes gracefully upon his shoulders. He wears a lovely, flowing robe featuring the Sacred Heart symbol upon his chest and his beautiful bare feet are exposed at the base of his robe. His enticing hands are open and reaching out as if to welcome you into his arms. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most widely practiced Catholic Faith devotions wherein the heart of Jesus Christ is viewed as a symbol of “God’s boundless and passionate love for mankind.” The Sacred Heart is depicted as a flaming heart shining from behind with divine light, pierced by the lance with a bleeding wound, and encircled by the crown of thorns. And Christian faith depicts it more as a flaming heart, while the wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of Christ’s passion and the flames a furnace of ardent love. You can depict it how you choose! We believe that his original home was most likely a wonderful old church where he was admired for many years. Due to his materials, he should only be exhibited indoors…. Which is exactly where we all need the Lord to be anyway… on the inside!!! He will be absolutely divine in your entry way or heavenly in a sunroom surrounded by indoor foliage or faux plants & trees. Antique Burmese Gilt Lacquer Sadaik Manuscript Chest on an Associated Stand, late 19th century. The chest is constructed of teak covered in lacquer and gold leaf with a hinged lid and detailed decoration on four sides. The high relief thayo lacquer depicts narrative scenes from the Jataka tales, stories of the previous lives of the Buddha. Each tableau bordered by a tendril vine frame has reserve cartouches of birds or figures within. The narrative scenes are varied with a basic ground consisting of a field of linear components representing water and upright tendrils representing rice paddies. It is evident that a great journey is taking place with components such as wandering figures, elephants, deer, lions, serpents, tree spirits, foliage, trees and palaces rendered in relief. The elaborate high relief thayo lacquer is molded and modeled of a putty of lacquer sap mixed with clay, saw-dust, and/or ash. The interior and back are red lacquered. The large lid with overhanging lip is hinged at the back and a later interior brass side arm to prevent the lid from falling back. The added French style hardwood stand with cabriole legs, apron and shell designs appears to be of the same time period or possibly later. Condition: Minor lacquer losses and cracks around the lid frame. The gold leaf on the lid rubbed revealing the red lacquered ground. Other minor losses and restorations commensurate with age and use otherwise fine condition. Late 19th century. Size Overall: 38.75 in. high x 41 in. wide x 26.5 in. deep (98.5 x 104.2 x 67.3cm) Sadaik measures: 25 x 38.5 x 25.75 (63.5 x 97.7 x 65.4cm) Approximate Weight: 60 lbs. (27.2kg). According to his advertisements, he traded in wood carving, silverware, embroidery, ivory carving, silk and curios. This lucrative business thrived in collecting local artworks and selling them to the British. This business grew rapidly and soon opened branches in Rangoon, Colombo & London.
