This impressive wine jug, made in 1795 during the reign of King George III, is an artistic example of the work of the renowned silversmiths Peter and Ann Bateman. The jug rests on a curved base with an elegant fluted profile on the rim and is decorated with a surrounding frieze of leaf motifs in fine ‘bright-cut’ engraving.
The indented stem and the amphora-shaped body with vertically curved walls give the jug a classic look. The curved mouth rim with beak-shaped spout ensures harmonious lines, while the hinged lid is domed in the centre and crowned by a spherical knob. The curved wooden C-handle stylishly rounds off the design and provides a comfortable grip.
The wide frieze with leaf and flower motifs on the wall, executed in extremely fine ‘bright-cut’ engraving, is particularly noteworthy. The front of the jug is also engraved with initials, giving the piece a personal touch.
The wine jug bears a full set of London silver stamps on the underside, which prove its authenticity and the year of manufacture. Works by Peter and Ann Bateman are recognised for their high quality craftsmanship and can be found in major collections worldwide. It was a unique and one-of-a-kind style of silversmithing.
Adler was an American silversmith, known as "silversmith to the stars". Beginning his career as an apprentice in 1938, Adler designed silverware and hollowware in shapes inspired by the Modernist art movement of the early 1900s. Adler learned the craft of silversmithing from noted 5th generation silversmith Porter Blanchard, one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts movement in California.
His name became associated with Hollywood glamour in the early 1940s, and he was commissioned to design mini-Oscars for Academy Award winners, crowns for Miss Universe and Miss USA, and silver bowls, candlesticks and goblets for celebrity clients including commissions for Micheal Jackson, Paul Newman, Presidents, and Astronauts. Three Sterling Silver Mounted Commemorative Horse Hoof Inkwells

These interesting inkwells were crafted in Britain between the Victorian period and early to mid-20th century.
The works have been created from horse hooves, applied with sterling silver mounts. Each hoof has been set onto a silver horseshoe and features a silver top and lid. Two of the tops have been engraved to imitate real horse hair, while the third is more simple, with banded ornament. All three have been given covers, two of which feature commemorative inscriptions. One lid states, ‘The Grey/1907-1917’ — presumably the name of the favourite racehorse, whose hoof this is — and another reads, ‘Mavourneen/ Died June 29th / Aged 53’. ‘Mavourneen’ is an Irish Gaelic word meaning ‘my beloved’. The dedicatee’s age of 53 implies that they were a human, perhaps a jokey, or racehorse owner. The lids open up onto a silver-lined interior, intended to be used for storing ink as part of a desk arrangement. The inkwells are stamped, on their underside, with silver hallmarks and maker’s marks, ‘J.T.’ and ‘C & CS’.

Rectangular box with inward corners in sterling silver 925/1000 gold plated with beautiful miniature fire enameled and hand painted by the painter Beatrice Mellana depicting the painting "The Turkish slave" by Francesco Mazzola known as "il Parmigianino" (National Gallery of Parma). Dimensions cm. 8.5 x 11.5 x 3. Weight gr. 345. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions.
It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books.
Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items.
Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques.
The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds:
1) Fire enamel.
2) Water tempera on an ivory plate.
3) Painted on mother-of-pearl.
Fire enameled miniatures:
On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors.
With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color.
It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times.
Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene.
Some colors must have darker tones than others because then, by superimposing the transparent enamel placed at the end of the miniature, they fade. This transparent layer, called “fondant” in jargon, must be smoothed and polished like all other translucent enamel colors.
