Baroque Mirrors

BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Large rectangular antique silvered French mirror in the Baroque style
Located in London, GB
Large rectangular antique silvered French mirror in the Baroque style French, 19th Century Height 153cm, width 94cm, depth 11cm Imitating the Dutch eighteenth century Baroque style, and crafted in France in the nineteenth, this exceptional piece is a large rectangular silvered mirror, combining a decadent, indulgent, elaborate Baroque design with the skill and proficiency of nineteenth century French craftsmanship. Notable for its impressively large size, it features delicate floral embellishments and a decorative vase surmount, and this stunning antique mirror would make a beautiful addition to any elegant interior. Although it was made in France, the silvered mirror is actually fashioned in the 18th century Dutch style. Known as the Dutch 'Golden Age', this period of the decorative arts was inspired by the previous Baroque style forms, which can be distinguished on the present antique mirror. Originating in 17th Century Italy, the ornate Baroque style is characterised by its dramatic exuberance and luxurious decadence. Floral garlands and scrolling foliate imagery are common to Baroque design, as is the use of heavy textiles such as velvet and damask. The influence of the Baroque is evident in the silver mirror's heavily ornamented frame, which features lavish, swirling embellishments that are balanced by the structured rectangular frame below. The Baroque style of the Dutch Golden Age experienced a 19th Century revival, which is excellently demonstrated by this large antique silvered mirror...

18th Century, Italian Baroque Giltwood Mirror
By Andrea Brustolon
Located in IT
18th century, Italian baroque giltwood mirror This fine Baroque mirror was made in Venice (Italy) at the beginning of the 18th century, Louis XV Era. The rectangular mirror is circumscribed by a golden wooden frame with three bands: an internal one carved with a palmette pattern, a central one smooth and an external one with phytomorphic elements. Around it develops a real triumph of gold carvings, with large volutes, curls and foliated elements carved in the openwork wood. The refined richness of the carvings finds maximum expression in the cymatium in which stands a large crown placed at the top of the phytomorphic elements. Stylistically the mirror can be approached to the works of the famous wooden sculptor Andrea Brustolon (Belluno, 20 July 1662-25 October 1732), great protagonist of the Venetian Baroque. Highly decorative and of great executive quality, this mirror will bring elegance, light and warmth in every room, placed over a dresser or a console, inserted in a living room, a study, an entrance hall, but also in a bedroom. Very refined and of remarkable sculptural virtuosity it is suitable next to antique furniture...
