About the Item

This legendary Low Slat Bench (Banquette / Daybed) was designed in the 1950s (circa 1953–1955) by the pioneering French modernist Charlotte Perriand and retailed through the prestigious Galerie Steph Simon in Paris. The design profoundly reflects Perriand’s formational years spent in Japan, drawing aesthetic inspiration from traditional Japanese interior architecture and the low-profile ethos of the tokonoma alcove. Constructed with an elongated platform of parallel solid wood slats, the bench integrates a modular drawer unit topped with a contrasting white surface, supported by an understated black-lacquered square steel frame. Functioning fluidly as a bench, daybed, or low display console, it represents a timeless synthesis of cross-cultural minimalism, structural honesty, and modular versatility.
