Timber Mazer 900 Sculpture by Tom Fereday
By Tom Fereday
Located in Geneve, CH
Timber Mazer 900 Sculpture by Tom Fereday Dimensions: W 90 x D 90 x H 35 cm Materials: Solid Oak & Walnut. MAZER COLLECTION: Mazer represents a series of geometric sculptures, each a celebration of the fundamental beauty and natural variation of stone. Strict brutalist forms of the table and seating collection are juxtaposed by soft organic cutaways carving through the porous stone surfaces, revealing the natural beauty and character of travertine. Named after the medieval term ‘Mazer’ meaning bowl, the collection presents subtle organic forms proportioned for table and seating function designed for permanence. Porous formations of the stone’s structure act as an intentional disruption to the clean geometric forms of the series adding character and intrigue. The limited edition series was crafted from travertine and locally produced in Italy from a combination of machine and traditional hand made processes, each piece exhibiting its own unique characteristics and form with no one piece alike. Mazer is designed by Australian designer Tom Fereday exemplifying Fereday’s desire to honour materiality, combining form and function to produce enduring works. Tom Fereday develops products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out. By using the materials and environment as a positive design constraint we guide intelligent and thoughtful design outcomes which connect with people through natural materials, tactile finishes and unique design. We strive to create enduring designs which are meaningful to people and their environment. Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in England studying at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Working across europe and Australia Tom Fereday went onto found his sole practice in 2012. Modern Organic Live Edge Slab Canopy Table Made from Sustainable Ancient Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
The Canopy table was inspired by a walk through the New Zealand native forest, looking up to the tree canopy observing the tree trunks and branches. Canopy is a design metaphor of the tree itself. Each leg is a trunk with branches that create their own unique spatial geometry with positive and negative spaces. Moving around the table is a true three-dimensional experience where the legs represent the trunks and branches of the trees, and visually interact just like a canopy in the forest. Canopy is also a testament to the craftsmanship of Mother Nature and the craftsmen at Treology. We wanted the timber to tell its own story and a base that added to the narrative. It’s also functional ensuring it accommodates people to sit around and share the pleasure of family dining. The Canopy Live Edge Slab table is made from rimu, a New Zealand native tree, rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, is preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The river rescued trees have been carbon dated at over 1500 years old. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. The Canopy table is finished with hand rubbed, low V.O.C., natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life. Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand. L 150” x W 41.5" x H 29.5" L 3800 m x W 1050mm x H 750mm Customization of dimensions, wood species and finish are available by request. About Treology Sustainability We rescue trees from rivers in the wilderness of New Zealand and Craft them into beautiful objects that merge the line between luxury furniture & functional art. We love connecting people to nature through our sustainable wood. Heritage Our company is built on our 150-year family heritage of luxury craftsmanship. We love collaborating with like-minded people who share our values of guardianship, sustainability and craftsmanship. Craftsmanship Craftsmanship is a quality that defines a Treology piece. Our artisan furniture-makers apply skills that have accumulated over a career of crafting natural materials with passion and attention to detail. From the Art collection of Marian and John Scott. Acquisition date: 1969. Evaluation date records: 1982. About: For the people of the Highlands, shells were considered treasures. As they were items that came from distant shores of Papua New Guinea they were already objects used for trade. The number one source of mother of pearl wealth was and is still is from the Thursday Island, one of the chain of Island that suggests the ancient land bridge across the Torres Straits from Cape York, Australia to New Guinea. They were fashioned into objects of adornment worn on costumes, hair, nose, etc. Of particular rarity was the gold lipped pearl shell. References: Plumes and Arrows, Inside New Guinea, COlin Simpson, Angus and RObertson, 1968. CATEGORY Anthropology: Ethnography. Tribal Kina Shell Pectoral Necklace, Pearl shell ornamentation (neck). Kina (shell money) Oject part of Pacific Cultures Collections. Purchased from the amazing private collection of Mark Lissauer who spent his life collecting niche ethnographic pieces. About Mark Lissauer: Mark Lissauer spent forty years travelling abroad for months at a time collecting ethnographic artefacts primarily from New Guinea and the islands of the West Pacific, and from Asia and Himalayan countries. Fluent in five languages and having in the course of business travelled to more than forty countries, Mark is well-known to museums and art-collectors around the world for his long career and his interesting and diverse collection of rare ethnographic material. Mark knows the origin and symbolism of each piece. Through extensive research and more than ninety trips around the globe, Mark familiarised himself with the traditions of the various cultures he visited in order to understand the meaning of each object to its region and tribe. His home has a specialist library and several rooms are filled with tribal carvings, textiles and ethnographica. He acquired his first tribal piece in 1948 during a business trip to Milne Bay, New Guinea, and has since documented the acquisition of some 35,000 items. Several thousands of these have been sold to important private collections and museums worldwide, including the Rockefeller Museum, the British Museum and the Musée National des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie, now incorporated into the Louvre Museum. Estimator certificate of authenticity by Wayne Heathcote Tribal Art Dealer and Expert.
