Kirman Rugs and Carpets

KIRMAN STYLE

Antique and vintage Kirman rugs and carpets are named for the southern Iranian city that has been a renowned major center of high-quality carpet production since the 16th century. These furnishings are considered works of art and are celebrated for their fine craftsmanship, sumptuous colors and durability.

This type of Persian carpet is sometimes spelled Kerman, like its place of origin, the capital of the Western Asian country’s Kerman Province. Iran encompasses different cultures, languages and dialects, and its exquisite rugs reflect this diversity.

The different types of Persian carpets are named for the towns, villages and regions where they’re made. Kirman rugs, carpets, wall hangings and other textiles have long been popular with international audiences, including in the early 20th century when they were marketed as Kermanshah carpets. Compared to other Persian rugs, Kirman examples are known for being vividly colored with natural dyes and characterized by a diverse variety of patterns, ranging from arabesques embedded with floral touches and details like deer and lions to overlapping cartouches in a broad palette of rich hues.

Others feature an ornate central medallion, vase shapes, rows of shrubs or a flourishing tree of life created through an asymmetrical knotting technique so that the wool pile on cotton is “double warped.” Some of the more elaborate carpets commissioned from the Kirman workshops in the 18th and 19th centuries included large-scale naturalistic scenes based on European paintings or Gobelin tapestries.

The major workshops of Kerman informed weaving in nearby rural areas such as those created by the Afshar tribe. The international popularity of Kirman carpets, meanwhile, inspired designers across the globe, such as William Morris in England. A leading designer of the Arts and Crafts movement, Morris revived historical techniques such as printed fabrics in the furnishings he created. He owned Kirman carpets and used them as a source for his work.

Both vintage and contemporary rugs influenced by Kirman designs remain in demand for their lavish palette and distinctive patterns. In 2013, a 17th-century Kirman carpet was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for an astounding $33.8 million.

The Garden Eternal: A Vintage Persian Lavar Kerman Rug Masterpiece
Located in Dallas, TX
78342 Rare Vintage Persian Lavar Kerman Rug, 11'03 x 16'11. The Garden Eternal: A Vintage Persian Lavar Kerman Masterpiece in the Mohtasham Style In the rarefied world of Persian weaving, few creations possess the splendor, heritage, and orchestration of this extraordinary vintage Lavar Kerman rug — a luminous homage to the legendary Qaleh Mohtasham Garden style of 19th-century Kerman. Designed in the manner of a chahar bagh (four-part paradise garden), its richly compartmentalized layout evokes the imperial gardens of Shiraz and Isfahan, where geometry met divine horticulture and the soul wandered through ordered bloom. Here, that sacred garden has been rendered in wool — eternal, unwithering, and utterly exquisite. The exclusive composition is a symphony of saturated elegance. Glorious panels burst forth with ornate floral bouquets, each encased in intricate golden latticework reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts and Qajar enamelwork. Garnet reds, lapis blues, turquoise, emerald, and rose swirl through each quadrant, punctuated by a commanding oval medallion blooming at the heart — framed by acanthus scrolls and curling rinceaux. This visual architecture is not merely decorative — it is symbolic, echoing centuries-old Persian cosmology, where gardens represented spiritual harmony and the divine order of the universe. A cartouche border of vase motifs gracefully frames this exquisite work of art, reflecting the central axis with floral abundance and poetic restraint. Each bloom, urn, and scroll is executed with painterly finesse, the wool’s velvety pile catching light like cloisonné. Upon closer inspection, a rare inscription is discreetly nestled into the border — the signature of the weaver — a whispered acknowledgment of the artist behind the art. This personal touch elevates the piece from artifact to authored legacy. To encounter a Lavar Kerman rug of this scale and pedigree — one that blends architectural majesty with botanical abundance — is an uncommon privilege. It is not simply a textile, but a cultural heirloom, woven in the spirit of sanctuary and status. In honoring the past, it supports the present: preserving the vanishing knowledge of Persian loom artistry and sustaining generational craftsmanship. For the collector, the aesthete, or the steward of legacy interiors, this is a rare opportunity to live among art that is as storied as it is stunning — a garden not of petals, but of permanence. Antique Persian Gold Navy Blue Ivory Floral Millefleur Kirman Rug
Located in New York, NY
Kirman is an ancient city, with an incredible history going back over a thousand years. Marco Polo was one of the first westerners to view Kirman rugs. The city is located in the central south-eastern section of Iran, in the province that bears its name. Kirman carpets are perhaps one of the most recognizable within the antique Persian rug category. A typical pattern for Kerman rugs and carpets is a floral or architectural theme in the main border with a central medallion in the field. Other patterns include the finer Kirman Lavar style with garden, tree-of-life, vase, and all-over millefleur designs, or the many pictorials which tell the story of a significant figure or event in history. The vase design carpets originated during the Safavid dynasty, and are among the greatest masterpieces of Persian weaving. A stunning pattern of vines and palmettes derived from classical Persian Kirman unfolds elegantly across the rich ground of this sumptuous antique Persian Kirman carpet. This carpet has a full pile and measures 9.10 x 12.8 ft and is from circa 1940s. This rug can be used on the floor or as a wall hanging antique tapestry rug...
