A beautifully preserved example of the iconic MR Chaise Lounge, originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927 and later produced by Knoll International. This particular piece is best attributed to Knoll’s mid to late 1980s to 1990s production, distinguished by its seamless heavy-gauge tubular steel frame with a continuous bend, stitched (as opposed to riveted) saddle leather support straps, exposed button-head cushion straps, and its original deep oxblood / burgundy leather upholstery. Unlike earlier two-position examples from the 1970s, this model features Knoll’s three-position reclining system, a refinement introduced in the late 20th century to enhance comfort and usability. The original leather cushion presents beautifully, with a rich, even patina consistent with careful use in a well-maintained environment. As expected of Knoll International’s production in the 1980s and 1990s, the leather is of exceptional quality, supple yet robust, complemented by thick matching saddle-leather straps with stitched detailing that reinforce the chaise’s luxurious character. The polished tubular steel retains its bright luster with only minimal signs of age, while the upholstery remains supple, surface-rich, and clearly consistent with Knoll’s late-20th-century construction methods. Amazing midcentury brown fabric and chromed steel chaise longue. This wonderful daybed is attributed to the American designer Paul Tuttle and was produced during the 1980s. This item is wonderful because of the structure of the chair, made of chromed steel and the tobacco brown fabric cover, made in one piece and adhering on the structure. The cover can be unsheathed from the back. The piece is incredibly elegant because of the structure and will smarten a living room or a midcentury studio. Paul Tuttle started out working in the studio of designer Alvin Lustig in Los Angeles. He soon received the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin West Fellowship, an apprenticeship program with mentorship from Wright himself. Tuttle moved to Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, and impressed Wright during his short stay of four months. Tuttle then moved back to Los Angeles and worked on furniture building by himself awhile, before serving as an apprentice to architecture firms Welton Becket & Associates and Thornton Ladd & Associates. As an apprentice, Tuttle worked on interior design. In 1956, Tuttle moved to Santa Barbara where he met Hans Grether, owner of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Doestch, Grether & Cie. Grether hired Tuttle as a design consultant shortly thereafter. In 1966 Tuttle gave a solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, cementing his position as a leading American designer. He also won the first ever Carson Pirie Scott Young Designer Award for the popular "Z" Chair in 1966. The design for the "Z" Chair, originally known as the "Rocket Launcher" would become Tuttle's most well known work. Tuttle was hired by Strassle in 1967 as a designer, and subsequently spent half his time abroad in Switzerland until he left the position in 1983. In 1978, Tuttle's work was featured in a solo exhibit called "Paul Tuttle, Designer" at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Handsome streamline modern, Mid-Century Modern, or Industrial style royal blue & vinyl or faux leather and chrome chaise or daybed with adjustable head or back rest. Wonderful condition keeping in mind that this is vintage & not new so there will be signs of wear & use. The beautiful original royal blue vinyl has some nicks, holes, & dings, specifically on the four corners, which have been repaired. One of the chrome legs has pitting that has been polished & touched up. And there is a small 1/4 “cut” in the main pad area which we felt was better left alone. Some may want to recover but repairs are minor & look great, so it is priced accordingly. Please see photos & zoom in for details. We attempt to portray imperfections. Circa mid-20th-late 20th century. Note: The vinyl has been treated with lexol and is ready to use. No dust cover as legs are easily removeable for transporting & storage.
