Campaign Chaise Longues

CAMPAIGN STYLE

Sometimes called “knock-down” furniture, campaign furniture was designed to be folded, collapsed, taken apart and packed flat to load onto a ship or a camel’s back. Although mobile furniture for military campaigns dates back to the Romans, the British Army in its global conquests in the 18th and 19th centuries defined the style with sturdy and elegant pieces. Even in a tent thousands of miles from London, a four-poster bed, dining table and seating could simulate the comforts of home.

Antique and vintage campaign-style furniture was also initially designed as propaganda. The mahogany and teak structures were part of a purposeful demonstration of power in these campaigns, with the colonizing military officers imposing their culture and view of what they considered “civilized” on a given land and its peoples. Designers and manufacturers including Thomas Butler, Ross & Co. of Dublin, and Morgan & Sanders contributed to the rapid production of this furniture as the British Empire expanded through Africa, Asia and Australia.

Campaign furniture was utilitarian as well as refined, fitted with recessed brass handles and brass angles on stackable chests and other case pieces to protect vulnerable corners. The Wellington chest was one of the most famous pieces to come out of this style, named for the Duke of Wellington, who slept in his campaign bed long after his battles were over.

The flexibility of campaign-style furniture would influence 20th-century Scandinavian modernists such as Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Arne Norell. For his 1930s Safari chair, Klint drew on the simple Roorkhee chair, named for a town in northern India. The lightweight and adaptable campaign-style seat was created in the late 19th century and had no fixed joinery. The Roorkhee’s influence can also be seen in the Wassily chair, a pared-down work of tubular metal and durable canvas conceived by legendary Bauhaus instructor Marcel Breuer.

Now, 21st-century designers like Jomo Tariku and Dokter and Misses are creating pieces that recognize the contributions of African artisans to campaign furniture in order to reframe this style without overlooking its difficult past.

Rattan Lounge Chair & Ottoman Orange Fabric Cushions by Helmers Manufacturing Co
Located in Topeka, KS
Marvelous vintage rattan lounge chair and ottoman by Helmers Manufacturing Company with spring seat and ottoman cushions and nubby orange fabric. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. It has been cleaned, vacuumed, and a fresh coat of amber sealer on the rattan. The cushion sound “crispy” but it is not the cushions. It is the vintage backing on the fabric. Although the fabric is in great condition and a fabulous color, you may choose to recover. They are priced accordingly. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Early 1900’s-1940’s. “In order to write about life, first you must live it.” -Ernest Hemingway. Well…lean back, put your feet up, and live your BEST life lounging in this phenomenal rattan lounge chair and ottoman by Helmers Manufacturing Company!! This is a gorgeous lounge chair and ottoman comprised of rattan frames and wraps, pillow back cushion, spring seat and ottoman cushion wearing a fabulous nubby orange fabric. Although we don’t believe the fabric to be original, we expect it was reupholstered sometime in the 1950’s, and it’s in good condition! The cushions are a bit stiffer and make some crispy sounds (we believe this to be from the backing on the fabric) so some will want to recover at some point, but it can be used as is for quite some time. This set bares a lot of styles including campaign, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, and rustic. We also think this set looks like something right out of Earnest Hemingway’s living room with an “Out of Africa” inspired style! It also has a Ralph Lauren feel. It’s just FABULOUS!! It has straight wide arms consisting of three double rattan bars that curve around to the bottom front of the seat cushion. The ottoman slopes back with a nice angle so your feet hang down comfortably. This is just the set you need to kick your feet up and relax in your Coastal or Island style sitting room, in the study facing the fireplace, or maybe out on the Lanai or sunroom. Henry J, Helmers Sr. was a native of Germany but came to America as an infant with his parents. Approximately 1870 they moved to Leavenworth, Kansas. He worked hard and early in life at whatever jobs he could but was unhappy and life was tough. Eventually he became a barber and practiced for some time but was unfulfilled. He disposed of his barber business and began to focus on producing a barber supply line, which he did until 1881, when he added the manufacture of furniture. In 1888 Mr. Helmers organized Helmers Manufacturing Company and manufactured a general line of furniture. In 1901 he established a branch in Kansas City and in 1905 built a jobbing house there. The Helmers Manufacturing Company Building was built in 1909 to accommodate an expanding furniture...
