Mid-Century Modern Dining Room Chairs

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

ICONIC MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE DESIGNS

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

MCM Grand Haven Chair by Jack Van der Molen for Jamestown Lounge in Blue Fabric
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous Mid-Century Modern Grand Haven dining or accent chair designed by Jack Van Der Molen for Jamestown Lounge Company. Beautiful vintage condition. We had the foam replaced in the original cushion, but it still wears its original blue hopsack fabric. We have deep cleaned the fabric but there are still hints of staining. Hard to find but it is there. I would not be afraid to use it however. The original webbing has been replaced and the wood has been restored to its original glory. However, you may still find small imperfections as it is a vintage piece. Please see photos, circa 1950s-1960s Roses are red, violets are blue, and so is this awesome Grand Haven chair we have to offer you!!! We have a vintage ad that denotes these as “the famous Grand Haven chair, winner of the coveted House Beautiful Classic Award given for exceptional value in design, construction and comfort.” That couldn’t be more accurate! Besides the obvious beauty, this chair is super comfortable and ready to grace your mid-century modern home with its bold presence. It wears its original blue “hopsack” fabric, and we had the foam replaced in the original cushion, so it is closer to its original condition. This would be a wonderful accent chair to have in your entry way for sitting as you remove your shoes or a king chair at your dining table. Wherever you choose to put it, this chair is sure to be your new conversation piece. Jack Van der Molen is an award-winning gifted American designer of the mid-20th century. He was born in 1922 and is a man of many accomplishment and talents. He was awarded five Battle Stars for his actions during WWII, is a fabulous golfer winning many tournaments, and an excellent watercolorist with work in private and commercial collections. He was educated at Kendall School Design in Grand Rapids. His furniture design work successfully combines organic details with clean lines. He designed several lines of furniture for Jamestown Lounge Co. including “Americana Casual”. He even won the coveted House Beautiful Magazine “Best Chair of the Year” award for his “Grand Haven” chair for Jamestown in 1959. In addition, he collaborated with Dupont initiating use of polyester fiber in upholstered furniture. His 61 years designing for top manufacturers is celebrated by how desirable and sought after his designs are today. Jamestown Lounge Company of Jamestown, New York was founded in 1888 by four partners. They first manufactured, obviously from their name, only lounges. These were long armless, backless, upholstered pieces with a hard roll at one end…what my mother always called a “fainting couch”. They soon added other box couches and convertible sofa beds leading into full manufacturing of all kinds of case and upholstered goods. They are famous for their Feudal Oak...

Set of 6 Model 77 by Niels O. Møller for JL Møllers Møbelfabrik, Denmark, 1960's
Located in Deland, FL
Enhance your dining space with this exquisite set of six chairs designed by Niels O. Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, featuring the iconic and rare Model 77 dining chair. Crafted from solid old growth teak wood, these chairs exemplify the timeless elegance and superior craftsmanship of Danish Modern design. The seats have been re-corded by the previous owner using a more open, unlaced weaving technique, adding a unique and contemporary touch to the classic design. If this style of cording does not suit your taste, please message us prior to checkout to discuss your re-cording or reupholstery options. This set of chairs is a perfect blend of form and function, making it a sophisticated addition to any dining area. Niels Otto Moller was a Danish furniture designer, known for his modern and functional designs. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and went on to work for various furniture manufacturers, including J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, where he designed the Model 80 Dining Chairs. J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik was a Danish furniture manufacturer, founded in 1944 by Jorgen Langkilde Moller. The company was known for producing high-quality furniture in the Danish Modern style, using materials such as teak and oak. The company was in operation until the late 1970s. We currently only have these six Model 77 chairs in stock and when they sell they're gone forever. Make them yours today! ---Dimensions--- Width: 19.5 in / 49.53 cm Depth: 19.5 in / 49.53 cm Height: 30 in / 76.2 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm This set of ultra-rare model 77 Møller dining chairs has undergone some minor repairs over the years. The most involved repair includes dowls and can be seen in the photos provided. There are also scratches, nicks and other smaller crack repairs present (all of which can be seen clearly in the detail photos provided). With that said the solid teak frames and legs are in overall very good shape and the woodgrains are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light. As purists, we strive to keep our pieces in as original condition as possible. However we offer a full-range of expert restoration services from carpentry to upholstery to fabrication. If you're interested in having this set of Møller 77...
