Jan Armgardt Papageno Sculptural Swivel Lounge Chair for Leolux, Netherlands, 1990s An iconic Papageno lounge chair, designed by German designer Jan Armgardt for Leolux in 1993. The Papageno is one of Leolux's most recognizable designs and is characterized by its exuberant organic silhouette, generous curved armrests and distinctive sculptural presence. Armgardt conceived the chair with an intentionally playful and almost anthropomorphic character, resulting in a design that remains instantly recognizable more than three decades after its introduction. This example features a dark taupe/brown suede upholstery combined with the characteristic sculptural aluminium swivel base. The organically shaped seat shell appears to float above the unusual star-shaped pedestal, giving the substantial chair a surprisingly light appearance. The sweeping backrest, rounded wings and curved front section flow almost continuously into one another. Decorative stitched seams emphasize the chair's organic geometry. The Papageno has remained part of the Leolux design vocabulary since its introduction in 1993 and represents an expressive example of Dutch postmodern and organic design of the 1990s. The chair retains its existing dark suede upholstery, which shows visible signs of use including variations in color, rubbing, marks and surface wear, as shown in the photographs. The aluminium swivel base shows normal age-related wear. Due to the condition of the existing suede, professional reupholstery is recommended. The chair provides an excellent opportunity for reupholstery while retaining the distinctive original seams, proportions and sculptural character of the Papageno design. Upholstery Option Professional reupholstery can be arranged upon request. The Papageno works particularly well in high-quality suede, nubuck or soft leather, which emphasizes its flowing organic shape. A premium wool or textured upholstery fabric would also provide a more contemporary interpretation. For this chair, I would personally choose warm cognac/camel suede or nubuck. In that realm, Schimmel & Schweikle focus on developing concepts that deal with the closing gap of the digital and physical realm. For their graduation project "Return to Default" in 2018, Moreno Schweikle and Janne Schimmel digitally manipulated the DNA of three standard office chairs, creating faintly familiar mutants. This particular conference chair was blown up into an overstuffed version, showcasing the importance of recycling shapes in design. The chairs stack neatly, so all six travel together on one pallet, which keeps shipping far more reasonable than sending them one by one. Why we love these chairs The S22 is one of the great Dutch school chairs. Galvanitas made them for schools, canteens, sports clubs and community halls, and they were built to be used every single day: a strong tubular steel frame with splayed, compass-style legs and a one-piece molded shell seat. That leg frame is why people call it the "pyramid chair". From the side you see a sharp triangle, from the front a clean A-shape, and with six of them around a table the rhythm of those legs looks fantastic. This is honest, functional Dutch design from a time when furniture had to last. Comfortable and practical The shell curves in the right places, so you sit well through a long dinner or a full working day. The legs are shaped to stack on top of each other and to hook together in a straight row, so the chairs are easy to store and perfect wherever you want flexible seating. Light enough to lift with one hand, strong enough for daily use in a busy family home or a commercial space. Where they work Six chairs around a rough oak farmhouse table, a long refectory table or a clean white dining table. They are just as good in a restaurant, coffee bar, office canteen, studio, shop or co-working space. The deep red seats bring colour and energy to a room with concrete floors, raw wood, brick or white walls. A natural fit for loft, warehouse and industrial interiors, and they give a calm modern home a bit of character. Design connections If you like the industrial furniture of Jean Prouvé, especially his Standard chair and compass-leg tables, you will recognise the same engineering thinking in the S22. A pair of wonderfully characterful Dutch armchairs in solid oak with hand-woven rush seats, made around 1935. The tall backs are shaped like a shield with a gently scalloped top and a pierced clover or trefoil cut-out, the armrests rest on thick square posts, and the chairs stand on sturdy, slightly splayed legs joined by stretchers. The proportions are low and broad, like small thrones from a fairy tale, which is why these chairs are often called "storybook" chairs. The oak has a warm, mellow honey tone with a beautiful dry patina, and the natural rush seats complete the honest, rustic character. Chairs like these were made by Dutch and Belgian village carpenters in the interwar years, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and by traditional farmhouse furniture. They fit perfectly with the work of designers such as Axel Einar Hjorth, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Touret for Marolles...
