A mid-19th century Swedish Gustavian style painted wood stick back kitchen sofa or bench, circa 1850s. Scraped to the original off white paint, this antique sofa bench is typical of the Swedish desire for light and soft colors that helped bring light to rooms during the very dark winters in Scandanavia. Showcasing the stylistic characteristics of the Gustavian era, it features carved flat spindles or slats topped with petite carved finials adorning the back and arm supports and a long rectangular upholstered lift seat that opens to reveal a convenient storage compartment.
