Solid Walnut large fainting sofa by Ray Leach
About the Item
We are pleased to present this exquisite collection of restored sculptural wood furnishings by little-known California designer Ray Leach. The collection was commissioned in 1952 for the home of Joseph Exley in the Garthwick neighborhood of Portland, OR and manufactured in the same city by the Charles Grant Company, an architectural millwork company. Charles Grant was a master carver himself, and his company was known to produce one-of-a-kind commissions for various clients such as Mr. Exley.
The home and furniture collection was completed in 1952 and both were later featured in the Spring 1957 issue of Architectural Digest. Sadly, very little is known of Ray Leach and his other work, but these unique pieces showcase a designer who was far ahead of his time and a lovely collection that foreshadows the flowing lines and organic forms of the craft furniture movement of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
