Baroque Seating

BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent โ€” antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer โ€” which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as Andrรฉ-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore โ€” reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements โ€” a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs
Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs

Set of Four Baroque Style Carved Giltwood and Velvet Throne Armchairs

Located in London, GB

Set of four Baroque style carved giltwood and velvet throne armchairs Italian, 20th Century Height 170cm, width 93cm, depth 73cm This magnificent set of four throne armchairs was crafted in Italy during the 20th century. Their design is inspired by the Baroque style, popular in Europe in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Each armchair is adorned with an intricately carved giltwood frame, featuring pierced backs lavishly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves. The top rail of each backrest is carved with two putti perched atop grape vines, likely a nod to Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine and celebration. These figures flank a central cartouche filled with additional ornate scrollwork. At the centre of the backrests is a coat of arms surrounded by more detailed acanthus carvings. Upholstered in sumptuous maroon velvet, the seats and armrests offer both luxury and comfort. The armrests culminate in striking carved winged busts, supported by scrolling elements that further enhance the armchairs' regal presence. Each throne stands on four legs, with the front two carved into lion pawsโ€”a popular symbol of strength and majesty. The cabriole-style legs are embellished with acanthus leaves at the knees, while the stretchers and aprons are decorated with more acanthus detailing, some parts complemented by delicate floral motifs. Embodying the decorative richness of the Baroque period, this set of thrones...
