Rare and Important Antique Revolving Bookcase by Horrix of The Hague, Holland
Located in Lisse, NL
Extremely rare and stylish, mid-1800s bookcase, by one of Holland's finest.
In 2010 the The Hague Municipal Museum (Haags Gemeentemuseum) organized an exhibition by the name of 'Koninklijk Goedgekeurd' which roughly translates to 'Royalty Approved'. On display in this exhibition were some of the rarest pieces of furniture by the best furniture makers in the history of the Netherlands. The work and history of 19th century, Dutch top furniture makers H.P. Mutters and Horrix (both of the Hague) were celebrated in this exhibition. It was named 'Royalty Approved', because both makers were 'purveyor to the court' and had provided many Dutch Royals with the best furniture available in that era. This revolving bookcase has been in our posession for more than 10 years and in our combined 35+ years of experience in this trade we have never seen another one. Not in books, not on the web, not in a museum. It is therefor too that we are quite certain that this revolving bookcase by Horrix would have been on display in the 2010 exhibition had the curators known about it.
This unique specimen is created out of various woodtypes, it is beautifully designed and executed, it stands as strong and stable as the day it was handcrafted (over 150 years ago), it still has the original porcelain casters, it revolves perfectly on its original base, it comes with the perfect maker's mark underneath (as shown in image 12) and it has the most beautiful and warm patina. All hand-crafted in what in the rest of the world is better known as the Victorian era, in the Netherlands this style is known as Willem III...

"Contas" Round Swivel Bookcase in Cabreuva Hardwood
Located in Jundiaí, SP
All the levels of this round bookcase, made of cabreuva hardwood, are permeated by buriti palms yarns with ceramic beads, creating different compositions depending on the angle we look at. All the soft colored shades of the ceramic come from the clay itself, stones and plants of the Jequitinhonha Valley, a Brazilian region known by its traditional craftwork.
The designer Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros spent some time there researching their art and the way they live. The inspiration to design this bookcase came from the curtains used to decorate their houses and also by the poetry written by Deuzani Gomes dos Santos, the artisan who received her in her home.
This bookcase, and all the pieces produced by Yankatu are numbered and accompanied by its soul, a small book that tells about the inspiration that gave birth to it and leaves blank pages so that its story can continue to be told by those who acquire it, turning it into something more, which does not change with fashion, which does not go by with time. To the contrary, it will move on from a generation to another, from hand to hand, each time with more stories to tell, each time incorporating the lives shared by it.
The wood comes from nature, each one is unique, with its veins, knots and tones. Because it is a natural material it suffers with the climate change, so cracks an shifts in color may emerge over time. The wood can also warp sometimes due to a large variation in relative humidity of the air. This aren’t defects on the contrary, all of this is considered normal.
All the handmade details in dis round swivel bookcase...
