From France, circa 1880, this rare pair of wrought iron consoles have marble tops and shagreen covered wooden drawers. The marble tops are original to the consoles and feature a “bec de corbin” molded edge. The marble is a Belgian “Rouge Royal”; a lovely mix of reds, gray, white, light brown, and chocolate veining. The marble hangs over a polished wrought iron frieze adorned with open cabochon medallions and square panels with inset worn gilt tole acanthus florets. In the center of each table is a shagreen covered wooden drawer assembled with dovetail construction. Shagreen is a leather that has rough, granular texture, sometimes coming from stingrays or shark. Rinceaux emanate from a pair of scrolled console legs and meet underneath the drawer in a large half acanthus leaf curl. The legs are joined at the bottom of the base by a curved horizontal stretcher. Large S-scrolls are adjoined to the stretcher and the legs by rivet construction. There are no welds on this console, and all rivets are flush to the iron, creating an uninterrupted surface and indicative of high quality iron work. These console tables would have originally been commissioned for beautiful residence in France during the last quarter of the 1800s.
