Late 19th century English drop-leaf table from the Mid-Victorian Era. Made of gorgeous yellowish-brown walnut with a fantastic burl walnut table top. The patina on the top is simply glorious!! The table was made circa 1850-60. It sits on beautifully turned fluted legs with the porcelain and brass casters. Two of the legs swing inwards and outwards to extend the 2 leaves of the table. Fully extended the table has a fabulous curved and indented edge, in an oval shape on both ends. The center column is beautifully turned and fluted. The 2 side columns are again beautifully turned and fluted and end with 2 extending scrolling supports that end in turned bulbous twin feet. This is a high quality item and highly desirable! This is our Editors choice piece, it is the only one I have ever personally seen of this type, as such it deserves special recognition This is a very decorative and well made table, it comes with the original club, balls and removable flag, this piece is full of Victorian whimsey, as soon as I saw it I new it need adding to our collection After some research, I have found that the maker's stamp WW refers to William Watt, a cabinetmaker who worked with architect E.W. Godwin in the late 19th century, specifically around 1870. Their collaboration is documented on pieces like a mahogany bow-back chair. William Watt's workshop was involved in the production of furniture designed by Godwin, I will include a brief biography below In terms of the condition there will be age related patina marks here and there, to be honest its exquisite and has the period finish, what more could you ask for! Godwin British 1833 - 1886 Over a period of twenty-five years Edward William Godwin is thought to have produced around four hundred eclectic designs, many executed in the Anglo-Japanese style which he is credited for popularising. During the mid-nineteenth century, British taste was dominated by ornately decorated furniture which created dark and heavy Victorian interiors. Looking to Japanese arts and crafts for inspiration, Godwin began to produce furniture which celebrated rectilinear forms devoid of ornament. He never visited Japan so relied on imported goods, amassing his own collection of Japanese prints, ceramics and furniture. His preference for elegant lines and undecorated surfaces resulted in lighter, sculptural forms, which looked forward to modern furniture design. Ebonised surfaces defined his Anglo-Japanese style, and Godwin regularly incorporated various floral and abstract motifs into furniture panels. Reducing decoration to series of turned spindles and ribbed grooves, a preference for light construction and utility dominates his work, adhering to principles of the Aesthetic Movement. Although he is largely recognised for his Anglo-Japanese furniture, Godwin never tied himself to one style. As a result, many of his designs demonstrate an interest in Ancient Egypt and Greece, Gothic, Queen Anne and Jacobean furniture. His Anglo-Greek and Anglo-Egyptian furniture designs are characterised by inlaid and geometric-turned decoration, angled supports and splayed legs, yet retain an elegant and functional aesthetic. Another distinguishing feature of his work is the use of solid, structured lines, akin to those seen in Japanese woodblock prints. Godwin also had an interest in Chinese decorative arts, his grid-like forms and interplay of solid and void spaces likely being inspired by Chinese hardwood furniture...

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare and extremely important hand carved walnut fully stamped library table by Angiolo Barbetti of Firenze What a find… this table is by one of the finest Italian carvers of all time, dating to circa 1860, Barbetti’s works sell in the hundreds of thousands, they are highly collectable, impossible to find and when they do come up for sale they usually end up in museum collections, they are simply that good This is an Italian carved walnut library or centre table, the cartouche shaped top with gadrooned edge and leather inset, the carved and pierced frieze incorporating a central shell motif flanked by scroll motifs with swags of flowers, each conforming cabriole shaped leg incorporating similar motifs and joined by an X-stretcher centred by a seated cherub, on scroll carved feet, the underside with branded stamp 'BARBETTI, FIRENZE' What more can I say! The condition is period correct and very fine, we have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, it is in gallery ready order throughout Dimensions: Height 82.5cm Width 142cm Depth 76cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Angiolo Barbetti (1805 - 1873) was a skilled carver, designer and decorator, with a flourishing atelier in Florence during the nineteenth century. After working in his father Massimiliano's atelier in Siena, he took up an apprenticeship with Giovacchino Guidi (d. 1842), considered one of Siena's finest ebenisti. By 1826-7, he had established a workshop on the Piazza San Giovanni, Siena and in 1830 exhibited his first works at the Istituto delle Belle Arti, Siena. In 1842, Barbetti moved his workshop to Florence, establishing himself near the ponte alle Grazie. Important commissions from this period included carvings for the interiors of Villa San Donato for Prince Anatoly Demidoff. Barbetti took part in many of the international exhibitions of the second half of the nineteenth century, including the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, where he was awarded a medal for a suite of carved walnut furniture. Following the exhibition, the suite of furniture was purchased by the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it remains today. Joined in the business by his four sons Rafaello, Egisto, Ottavio and Rinaldo by the beginning of 1860, the firm of Barbetti continued to find international success exhibiting successfully at the 1861 Florence exhibition, the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle and the Vienna Exhibition of 1873.
