Created while a lead designer for J. Winhart & Co., Ludwig Vierthaler’s cicada themed copper vase showcases the design principles which he developed at J. Winhart in the pre-war years, where emphasis was placed on craftsmanship and the characteristics of the material itself. The vase’s ambiguous quality and use of allegory also shows his uncanny understanding of the dual nature of German life at the time. On the one hand, under Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany was asserting herself strongly in the Weltpolitik through alliances with other central-European powers and in making grand plans to grow in military strength. With hindsight, Vierthaler’s vase is all the more remarkable for his prescience in the twilight of an empire.

Every designer knows that getting a truly striking design on paper is very difficult, but finding the right artisan to perfectly execute it is at least as big of a challenge. In this case the maker must have been a highly skilled craftsman, because the execution and the finish of this truly beautiful pendant are simply marvelous.
What makes this hand-crafted light fixture extra special are ofcourse the inlaid and large chunks of transparent glass combined with large and smaller stained glass chunks in beautiful amber color.
Both with the light switched on and off, all these uniquely shaped pieces of glass make this pendant a work of art on your ceiling.
Over the many decades the color (or patina) has made this light even more beautiful and this elegant design after more than 100 years still is as appealing as the day it was made. This perfect size pendant survived two world wars and for all the crude and organical looking glass 'chunks' to still be in there AND for this light to still be this pretty and complete is like an ode to both the maker and to this lights' former owners. They clearly understood what it takes to both create and take care of something that is truly beautiful. A rare and striking antique French Napoleon III Second Empire Period (1852-1870) convertible rafraichissoir wine cooler drinks table by the ébéniste to the Emperor Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Tahan (1813-1892)
Crafted by Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Tahan, the esteemed cabinetmaker to Napoléon III, this wine table is a remarkable example of 19th-century European artistry, ingenuity, and fine craftsmanship. Executed in timeless Louis XV style, ebonized fruitwood featuring sophisticated Boule style Queen marquetry with inlays of mother of pearl and brass, adorned with ornate patinated bronze mounts, having a pierced brass galleried top fitted with a cartouche shaped handled serving tray, lifting to reveal a spacious open well with removable ice bin metal liner. Over an elegant scalloped apron, rising on long shapely cabriole legs affixed with eye-screws to accommodate the serving tray converting it to a stretcher style lower shelf, terminating on casters. circa 1860
Signed, retaining the original metal label that reads "TAHAN FOURNISSEUR DE L’ EMPEREUR Paris" (Tahan Supplier of the Emperor) to the interior compartment.
