Revival Drawings

This exceptional large-format original drawing depicts the Christ Roi — Christ the King — rendered in watercolor and pencil on a fine linen support, and enclosed in a handsome period frame executed by a Mulhouse, Alsace framing house (see label on verso). Measuring 62 × 54 cm, the work occupies a commanding presence on the wall, combining the grandeur of ecclesiastical iconography with the refined draftsmanship of a highly trained hand. It is a rare survivor in very good condition: a devotional object of genuine artistic ambition that transcends its liturgical origins to speak directly to the collector's eye and the interior designer's instinct for singular statement pieces. Iconographic Program The composition is rich with layered Christian symbolism executed with a precision and confidence that speaks to a practiced ecclesiastical workshop tradition. Christ is shown in a frontal, hieratic pose, wearing the jeweled Crown of Kings from which the Dove of the Holy Spirit ascends, placing him simultaneously within all three persons of the Trinity. The golden mandorla surrounding his head bears the Greek letters Alpha (Α) and Omega (Ω) — drawn from the Book of Revelation — affirming his role as the beginning and end of all creation. At the center of his chest, the Sacred Heart burns with thorned flames and is marked with a small cross, the devotional emblem par excellence of French Catholicism since the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 17th century. In his right hand, raised in the traditional Benedictio Latina, Christ extends a blessing. In his left, he holds the globus cruciger — the orb surmounted by a jeweled processional cross — symbol of his sovereign dominion over the world. The background field is filled with an interlaced pattern of crosses and foliage in shades of sienna, ochre, and sage green, drawn directly from the vocabulary of medieval stained glass cartoons...
