Jeanne Reynal was born in White Plains, New York, in 1903. Her early training in mosaics came from Boris Anrep, a Russian mosaicist working in Paris. Reynal was one of twelve apprentices in Anrep’s studio from 1930-38. Upon her return to the United States, Reynal made her way to California, working in the San Francisco Bay area. She relocated to New York City in 1946, and soon became an active member and collector of the Abstract Expressionists. In 1955, she married the painter Thomas Sills. Reynal died in 1989.
One of her earliest exhibitions was with Julian Levy in 1945. Jeanne Reynal’s next gallery affiliation was with Betty Parsons. She then joined Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery where she had a one person exhibit in 1954.
She purchased a house in Greenwich Village in 1948 and was a well-known and popular hostess for the Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist communities in New York and internationally. As an art collector herself, she helped Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko among others by purchasing their work very early in their careers and hanging it prominently around her residence.
