Pierre Gristot. France, 1911-1995
Grisot was born in Paris, he was a French post-Impressionist artist who was a member of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Grisot painted in a light-hearted style that was all his own.
Whether he was painting fashionable ladies of the day, nudes or flowers, his work was always full of colour and life and was very different from the styles of his contemporary painters. His paintings now serve as vintage reminders of the style of the mid 20th Century. One of the most enduring features of Grisot's work was his brilliant use of color and his evocative renditions of the female visage.
Grisot was born in 1911 in Paris. Grisot worked as an engineer but gave up this career and moved to Paris, where he studied painting for a year at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. After this he studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he obtained his diploma as a drawing teacher. Grisot taught drawing and painting for many years, but he also gave up this work to be able to paint freely.
The first exhibition of Grisot's paintings took place in Paris in 1942. In 1951 he received a prize for engraving and in 1952 the French government awarded him a scholarship for a stay of several months in Tunisia.
At that time the museum of Besançon acquired two of his works. Grisot took part in many exhibitions of paintings in Paris, especially in the Salons des Independants and with the group of "The Paris School", where he exhibited together with artists such as Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy and Villon.

Joseph Stevens is the older brother of the very well-known artist Alfred Stevens. In the book 'The Belgian Art Book' by J. de Geest, it is written that Joseph Stevens has given a new dimension to painting animals. Joseph Stevens is an early representative of realism and social art. While Eugene Verboeckhoven has royal dogs pose on a beautifully embroidered cushion, Joseph Stevens already has an eye for the dark side of animal existence: exploitation by man, who in turn is a victim of society. His first successful painting, Brussels in the morning, shows how miserable dogs and poor people suffer the same fate. In the Sandman, Stevens shows a joint effort of man and dog, in which the viewer cannot ignore the social conditions: exhausting labor at dawn in some suburb. The gray sky and monochromy of the suburb add to the sinister atmosphere. Joseph Stevens was one of the first artists to take the urban proletariat as his subject. Stevens enjoys a very high reputation in his Parisian years. His brother Alfred writes: 'I am of this time, but you, Joseph, you are of the race, and thus you are of all times.' French critics agree. Stevens' works are a source of inspiration for the literature of the time. For example, Beaudelaire writes a poem about Stevens' dogs.

Stevens was a painter, etcher and engraver. Brother of the gifted painter Afred Stevens. Education at the Academy in Brussels (1834-1835). Debuted at the Salon in Brussels in 1842. Continued his career in Paris in 1852. He was primarily the painter of canvases depicting domestic animals (dogs, monkeys, horses), sometimes in curious, even idiosyncratic situations, and far from romanticism. This realism, of which he was one of the pioneers, earned him the interest of critics and intellectuals.
His approach was defined by this contemporary realism that eschewed idealized depictions of animals as heroic emblems of nobility. Rather, Stevens emphasized the ordinary animals of everyday life, with a particular focus on working dogs, stray dogs and all of the mutts that wandered the streets of Brussels. This painting depicts the episode from Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part II Act III Scene V in which
Sir John Falstaff inspects the recruits mustered by Justice Robert Shallow and his
cousin Silence. Falstaff sits in a chair surrounded by his cronies whilst Bardolph leads Bullcalf forward.
Hayman’s treatments of Falstaff reviewing recruits are perhaps among the most successful depictions of a theatrical scene in British painting. The tableau vibrates with the energy that he brought to his Vauxhall supper box scenes of games and dancing, and is filled with the humour and observation of his portraiture. Every figure is in motion and proclaims its own individuality.
About Robert Ball Hughes (British-American, 1804-1868)
Known as Ball Hughes and also using that as a signature, this man was a sculptor and wax-portrait artist. He was born in London, England, and died in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He studied and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design in New York City. He emigrated to New York in 1829, having earned much prestige in England. In New York, he received many commissions for portrait busts in bronze and wax. Among his subjects were John Trumbull, Alexander Hamilton, and Washington Irving. From 1838 to 1840, he worked in Philadelphia and from 1840, worked in Boston. Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding.
The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age.
Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high.

Biography from Waddington's
Spanish-born Ramón Prats was appointed as the official artist and illustrator for "El País" newspaper in Havana, Cuba when he was 15 years old. After his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League of New York. He regularly exhibited at the Associated American Artists (AAA) Gallery until 1955 and also at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Prats moved to Mexico in 1956 and was pivotal in spearheading the development of modern art there until his death at age 74.

Ramon Prats (American, b. Spain, 1928-2003) developed his talent for painting while he was a child. At age 15, he was appointed the official artist and illustrator for El País newspaper in Havana, Cuba, where his family lived at the time. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in Santo Domingo and at the School of Graphic Arts in Havana, Cuba.
Upon completing his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York, where he studied at the Art Students League* of New York. The Associated American Artists* (AAA) soon commissioned him under an exclusive seven-year contract.
