Bernard Cathelin was a French painter and lithographer known for his stylized abstractions of flowers, landscapes, and figures. This signed and numbered lithograph depicts primroses in a small pot. Cathelin used thick palette knife applications and rich colors to produce a sense of light and corporeal form in his paintings, not unlike the work of Nicolas de Staël. Many of Cathelin’s landscapes depict the area of Provence, France, where the artist’s mother was from. Born on May 20, 1919 in Paris, France, he went on to study at the Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The brilliant colors of this French nature morte are quite impressive, allowing the imagery to be seen crystal clear. Oil enhancements have been applied to this 20th-century transferred image to evoke similarities to the painting that it is after, which is currently housed in Le Louvre Museum in Paris. Our version is incredibly well-done and true to the Alexandre François Desportes original, which is entitled Game, Fruit, Flowers, and a Dog (1712).
A variety of felled game (a rabbit and six birds) and a hunting rifle are displayed next to a stone fountain with a mythical creature mascaron water feature. The gadrooned basin is not filled with water, but rather a woven basket of blueberries next to a cluster of fruits including peaches and cherries (there is also a blue and white ceramic bowl full of peaches on a stone to the right of the fountain). Vibrant flowers in a wicker basket sit atop the thickly molded entablature of the cream-colored fountain. A pink rose bush grows on one side of the fountain, opposite from large, verdant bushes that obscure most of the blue sky. Laying beneath the fountain basin is a white hunting dog with black markings on its ears and face.
Desportes was born in 1661 in Champigneulle, in northern France, later studying in Paris with the Flemish painter, Bernaerts. Initially, Desportes was a well-respected portrait painter, living in Poland during his mid-thirties to paint aristocrats such as King John III Sobieski. Upon the king’s death, Desportes returned to Paris and switched his focus to painting animals and floral arrangements. Both Louis XIV and Louis XIV commissioned Desportes to paint portraits of their favorite hunting dogs. Desportes would often join the kings on royal hunts, where he would travel with a notebook for still life sketches...

These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969.
This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s.
The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels".

Powerful Hoi Lebadang Abstract Mid Century Lithograph Signed and Numbered

A mid 20th century lithograph print by Vietnamese / French artist Hoi Lebadang (1921 - 2015) signed and numbered. The colors employed, shades of red, white and charcoal set against a golden yellow, signify warmth and richness. The abstract composition beckons further inspection. The techniques used for creating this work of art include an embossed area of the work where the paper surface is raised in an abstract design. This work is presented in its original frame. I knew nothing of the artist when I bought this work, I simply knew that it appealed to me. A quick search online revealed this fascinating biography on the artist that I hope you'll read and enjoy. This comes from the Outside Folk Gallery website, "War shaped the life of Lebadang (Lê Bá Đảng.) Sometimes called Hoi Lebadang, this painter’s experiences in colonial-era Vietnam and WWII-era France flow into his work. Working at the turning point between 19th-century bohemianism and 20th-century modernism, he existed in two worlds simultaneously. The path that brought Lebadang to France in 1939 and secured his place in art history is complex. Looking at his childhood, you would never guess that this young Vietnamese boy would have such an impact on the art world. After shortening his name in 1950 to Lebadang, he only used Hoi when making lithographs. In colonial-era Vietnam, the French ruled Vietnam from the 1880s until 1954; France beckoned like a beacon for art and culture. Lê Bá Đảng (surname, middle name, given name), born in 1921, grew up with his eyes fixed on France. He grew up in a middle-class peasant family and, after primary school, felt the pull to travel.
