ViNTAGE THE LADY AND THE UNICORN LARGE WALL HANGING WOVEN TAPESTRY 128CM X 166CM
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
Royal House Antiques
Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this lovely vintage large wall hanging tapestry of "The Lady And The Unicorn"
A very good looking and decorative piece. This is an a period early 20th century piece and will look expensive, decorative and important in any setting.
Condition wise, apart from normal patina I can't see a single thing wrong with it anywhere, it looks sublime
the lady and the unicorn
Touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight... These six tapestries, woven in around 1500, represent the five senses against a detailed red background. The remaining sixth sense, explained only by the inscription “À mon seul désir” (To my only desire), has inspired countless theories. Without excluding a possible meaning in the register of courtly love, it could be a reference to free will: the woman with her decorative headdress and refined clothing, renouncing temporal pleasures.
These “millefleurs” (“thousand flowers”) tapestries are characterized by an abundance of flora, including flowers, orange trees, pines, hollies and oaks, and are inhabited by a peaceable bestiary (a monkey, dogs, rabbits and a heron).
In this idyllic natural setting conducive to contemplation, the unicorn by turns a participant and a simple spectator. Accompanied by a lion, it sports the coat of arms of the Le Viste family in every scene.
The Lady and the Unicorn wall-hanging was acquired in 1882. It is now considered one of the great masterpieces of Western art.

The Grail Tapestries
The Quest for the Holy Grail
In the early 1890’s Sir Edward Burn-Jones designed a series of tapestries illustrating the Quest for the Holy Grail. These were produced in collaboration with William Morris and some of them are now in he care of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
For conservation reasons the tapestries are only exhibited occasionally but are on show as from today, 22nd November 2008, until February 2009. This sequence of tapestries was originally designed for William Knox D'Arcy, for the dining room of his house, Stanmore Hall, Middlesex. It was the most extensive decoration scheme that the firm of Morris & Co completed.
A set of ten were designed by Edward Burne-Jones, who produced the figurative designs and based the costumes loosely on those of the twelfth century, John Henry Dearle, who designed decorative detail, and William Morris, who designed the heraldry.
Several further versions were woven later, although the entire series was only repeated once, for D'Arcy's business partner, George McCulloch, in 1898-99.
Birmingham's version of 'The Summons' is from the series produced for George McCulloch. The subject matter is based on the 15th century Thomas Malory...

Antique English Needlepoint Tristan and Isolde Tapestry with Medieval Style
Located in Dallas, TX
78092 Antique English Needlepoint Tristan and Isolde Tapestry with Medieval Style 02'04 x 03'05. Drawing inspiration from Viking love-romance history and Celtic legend, this handwoven wool antique English needlepoint tapestry beautifully embodies Medieval style. The wall tapestry depicts Isolde and Tristan drinking the love potion. This is a Petit Point with metallic thread (possibly silver/gold). The colors join to create a truly compelling dance, and inaudibly speak with a timeless voice that is characterized by sensual decadence, as well as by stately action. All facets of this piece collectively entwine to form the striking and grand charm of a textile that is worthy to depict the tender, emotive, and vibrant details of humans and histories, no longer known. With its commitment to tradition and heart full of whimsy, this Medieval style tapestry...

Boxing Carpet, Randolph Turpin, Middleweight Champion of the World, Sugar Ray
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
A large vintage Randolph Turpin carpet.
A wonderful impressive carpet made for the British boxer Randolph Turpin (nick named 'The Leamington Licker'). The carpet measuring nearly 3 meters by 4 meters was made by a life long friend, Mr Dennis Quayle, and would make a remarkable wall hanging. Quayle owned a high quality furniture store in Birmingham and supplied amongst other furnishings, high quality handmade carpets. Following Turpin’s triumph over Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world title in 1951, Mr Quayle had the carpet made as a gift for Turpin. Later in Turpin’s life when in trouble, Quayle bought back the carpet in order to help him financially, with the carpet remaining in the Quayle family ever since.
Randolph Turpin is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen who plied his trade with courage, honor and skill and gave Britain one of its best nights in a boxing ring. As a 33-1 underdog Turpin humbled the greatest fighter the world had seen, Sugar Ray Robinson, at Earls Court in London to become Middleweight Champion of the World. Sugar Ray was at his peak and the fight was the culmination of the flamboyant champion’s famous tour of Europe. Unable to cope with Turpin’s long reach and unusual wide stance the American struggled to land punches and Turpin’s strength inside was too much and he took the win on points after 15 rounds. He would lose the belt in a rematch 64 days later but Turpin’s achievement is a remarkable one which crowns a distinguished boxing career, he was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2001.
Randolph Turpin's titles:-
British Middleweight 17th Oct 1950
European Middleweight 27th Feb 1951
World Middleweight 10th July 1951
Commonwealth Middleweight 2nd Oct 1952

Large Early 19th Century Painted and Silkwork Picture 'The Good Samaritan'
Located in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
The picture retains its original gilt frame. The image is rendered in a mixture of silkwork and hand painted decoration and depicts the injured traveler on the roadside being aided by the Samaritan while the Levite and the Priest are seen in the distance. This parable is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.
A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.' Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?"
This work is vastly bigger than 19th century silkwork pictures...

By John Piper
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
JOHN PIPER CH (BRITISH,1903-1992) :CHIESA DELLA SALUTE, VENICE Screenprinted fabric, printed by Sandersons, 1959
In the late 1950's to the early 60's there was interest in painterly textiles that demonstrated the unique potential of screen printing, with its ability to capture the quality of brush-stroked colour
"The monumental grandeur of many artists' textiles in the early 1960's was necessary if they were to work in the large scale architectural interiors of the era which witnessed a rapid growth in new public buildings, all which required furnishing with suitably prestigious fabrics".
The painterly design is one of five fabrics designed by John Piper (1902-1993) for A Century of Sanderson 1860-1960, Sanderson's prestigious Centenary Collection.
This study of the Chiesa della Salute church in Venice was taken from Piper's 1959 travels when he was commissioned by the Arthur Jeffress Gallery in London. He then regularly made paintings of the city, and drew illustrations for an edition of Adrian Stokes...
