The painting was commissioned by Lelio Pasqualini (1549–1611), a native of Bologna then resident in Rome, where he was a canon at Santa Maria Maggiore. Its unusual composition may be linked to Pasqualini's antiquarian interests – he owned one of the most notable collections of the time. It is one of the best examples of Annibale's synthesis of the artists then active in Rome, as also seen in The Loves of the Gods frescoes around 1600 In this work we specifically see the influence of classical sculpture and Raphael, particularly the latter's cartoons for the Vatican tapestries. It is typical of Annibale's style in Rome but still linked to his early style – Mary Magdalene's red and gold dress...

Aubusson tapestry is tapestry manufactured at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France. The term often covers the similar products made in the nearby town of Felletin, whose products are often treated as "Aubusson". The industry had probably developed since soon after 1300 in looms in family workshops, perhaps already run by the Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Aubusson tapestry of the 19th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry, although generally regarded as not their equal. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...

This French tapestry, woven in the 19th century, depicts a port with a rocky, tree-lined shore and wooden ships in the distance. The large tapestry is framed by thick walnut veneered planks, resulting in an overall width of 7 feet and a height of 5 feet. It was produced on a jacquard loom from hundreds of individually dyed wool threads woven together to form the scene. In the foreground of the tapestry, we see fishermen along the shore, nestled between boulders and a large tree. We count at least 3 wooden ships, with a complex of stone buildings along the far side...
