Map Silk Embroidered Western Eastern Hemisphere New Old World Asia America Afri
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A rare, late-18th century, silk, embroidered, double hemisphere, world map, blackwork, sampler, showing the tracks of captain cook’s three voyages - Illustrating public understanding of the world in the late-18th century and the recent discoveries of the time delineating the tracks of Captain Cook’s three voyages. - Shows the incentive for further exploration during the 19th century as no mass is indicated within the southern polar region, the interior portions of western North America, Africa, and Australia are still relatively void of detail even though California is no longer shown as an island. - Includes beautifully worked allegories of the four continents Asia, the Americas, Africa & Europe, a cartouche being supported by two angels and a compass - The cream, silk ground is finely embroidered with a variety of stiches in black, silk threads emulating the black ink on maps. -“Recent international conflicts and voyages by Captain Cook and others made the study of geography exciting at the time this map was made. Elaborate embroidered maps...

Regency Silk and Wool Picture of Mother and Her Children, after John Hoppner RA
By Sir John Hoppner
Located in Downingtown, PA
Superb large English silk and wool portrait, A Mother and Her Four Children, after John Hoppner R.A., circa 1810-20, Within gilt frame. Silk over linen fabric ground, silk floss, worsted wool yarn, Merino wool yarn and oil paint. The picture depicts a large standing female figure dressed in a white dress and wearing a turban. She stands by two classical columns with her four children in front of her. The youngest child is sitting on the ground playing with her red shoe in her hands with a tambourine by her side. Her elder sister stands behind her. Large Early 19th Century Painted and Silkwork Picture 'The Good Samaritan'
Located in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
The picture retains its original gilt frame. The image is rendered in a mixture of silkwork and hand painted decoration and depicts the injured traveler on the roadside being aided by the Samaritan while the Levite and the Priest are seen in the distance. This parable is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.' Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?" This work is vastly bigger than 19th century silkwork pictures...
