About the Item

Mediterranean Harbor View of Port de la Selva, Catalan Coastal Landscape Artist: Josep Moscardó (Spanish, b. 1953) Title: Port de la Selva Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 23.62 x 47.24 in. (60 x 120 cm) Signature: Signed lower left Origin: Spain Style: Post-Impressionist / Modern Figurative Subject: Mediterranean landscape, harbor, seascape, coastal town Condition: Very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with the period Framing: Unframed DESCRIPTION A large and highly decorative Mediterranean harbor scene by Spanish painter Josep Moscardó, depicting the coastal town and port of El Port de la Selva on the Costa Brava, Catalonia. Painted from an elevated viewpoint, the composition opens across the sweeping blue waters of the bay, with sailboats, fishing vessels and marina structures scattered across the harbor. In the foreground, tightly grouped whitewashed houses with warm terracotta roofs descend toward the sea, while the dramatic green mountains of the Cap de Creus landscape rise beyond the town. Moscardó approaches the scene through expressive color rather than strict topographical description. Broad areas of turquoise and Mediterranean blue contrast with violet, ochre, green and coral tones, while the architecture is reduced to rhythmic blocks of color. The energetic brushwork and simplified forms give the painting an immediate, luminous quality and create a strong sense of Mediterranean atmosphere. The panoramic format, measuring an impressive 47.24 inches wide, is particularly effective for the subject and gives the work considerable decorative presence. Josep Moscardó was born in Barcelona in 1953 and trained at the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi and the Escola d'Arts Aplicades i Oficis Artístics in Barcelona. He has exhibited regularly since the 1970s, including a longstanding association with Barcelona's historic Sala Parés. His work has also been exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Nagoya. Moscardó is particularly known for Mediterranean landscapes, coastal views, urban scenes and interiors. His work belongs to the Catalan figurative and colorist tradition, combining direct observation with an expressive, distinctly post-impressionistic handling of paint. ARTISTIC INFLUENCES The vibrant palette, flattened areas of color and spontaneous treatment of the Mediterranean landscape recall aspects of Raoul Dufy, Albert Marquet and André Derain, while remaining firmly rooted in the modern Catalan pictorial tradition. An excellent example of Moscardó's Mediterranean landscapes and an especially attractive large-format view of one of the most characteristic coastal villages of northern Catalonia.
