About the Item

Jessie Arms Botke Leaf Pattern, circa 1930 Signed lower right Oil on Masonite 30 x 25 inches Charlotte Yarbrough, Santa Paula, California Private Collection, Oregon William A. Karges Fine Art, Los Angeles, California (acquired from the above) Private Collection (acquired from the above, 2002) Estate of the above Jesse Arms Botke was an American painter best known for her richly decorative images of exotic birds. Born in Chicago, she studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later trained with artists J.C. Johansen and Charles Woodbury. In 1911, she worked as an assistant to Albert Herter on a mural for the The St. Francis San Francisco, where she was responsible for painting the birds—a subject that would become the hallmark of her career. During a visit to Chicago in 1914, she met Dutch-born artist Cornelis Botke, whom she married the following year. After spending years traveling and working in different locations, the couple settled in Wheeler Canyon near Santa Paula, California, where Jesse lived for the rest of her life. It was there that she developed her signature style, creating vibrant, ornamental compositions featuring peacocks, parrots, and other exotic birds rendered with striking color and intricate detail. Throughout her career, Botke exhibited widely, earned numerous awards, and remained active in artistic organizations in both California and Chicago. Her works are held in major collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the San Diego Museum of Art. She and her husband also completed several notable mural commissions for schools, universities, and commercial buildings across the United States.

Brilliantly capturing the exotic and beautiful landscape of the cypress swamps of South Florida, this painting of a pair of snowy egrets is a superb example of Art Deco scene painting. The turquoise hue of the water and the cerulean of the sky contrast with the smooth limbs of the cypress tree and the white and purple-greys of the birds. This painting was made by Renee Harcombe...
