A fine and impressive vintage French 2.71 carat chrysoprase, 0.16 carat diamond and 0.07 carat ruby, 18 karat yellow gold bird brooch; part of our diverse gemstone jewellery collections. This fine and impressive gemstone brooch has been crafted in 18k yellow and white gold. This vintage brooch has been modelled in the form of two stylised birds perched on a closed umbrella. The body of each bird is ornamented with an oval cabochon cut chrysoprase. The yellow gold simplified wirework style heads incorporate eyes represented by claw set round faceted rubies, with a combined carat weight of 0.07cts. The heads are further embellished with scalloped white gold wirework designs accented with six claw set eight-cut diamonds. Each bird is embellished with tapering wings and tails, accented with concertina detailing. The tapering baluster style umbrella features white gold accents to the curved handle and tip. The 1960s brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and sheath style fastening. The reverse of the setting is hallmarked with the French maker's mark and 18k gold mark (eagle's head). This French gemstone brooch is supplied with an IDGL diamond and gemstone grading report card. Images do not always reflect the true colour and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual colour and showcases each stone. Condition This fine vintage French gemstone brooch is fine quality, set with impressive chrysoprase and rubies displaying fine colour and brilliance. Rubies are considered precious stones — along with diamonds, sapphires and emeralds — and have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs Scale, surpassed only by Moissanite and diamonds. They are composed of corundum, a colorless mineral that is also the basic material of sapphires. In the July birthstone, the red of the gemstone — and the various hues seen in sapphires — are produced by the presence of trace elements. In the case of a ruby, this element is chromium. Rubies range in color from vermilion to a violet red. They are also pleochroic, which means that a stone’s hue can vary depending on the direction of viewing. The most sought-after color is pigeon’s blood: pure red with a hint of blue.
Rubies that are hosted in dolomite marble are the most prized: Because the marble is low in iron, so are the rubies, resulting in a more intense color. Rubies found in basalt, which has a higher iron content, are generally darker and less intense.
When shopping for antique and vintage ruby jewelry, remember that the 4Cs of selecting the perfect diamond — color, clarity, cut and carat — also apply to rubies.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, the color of the July birthstone should be a vibrant to slightly purplish red, and the stone should be clear and inclusion-free. Accordingly, the cut should show off its color and clarity. As for the last criterion, fine rubies more than a carat in weight are rare. Often, large rubies are more expensive than diamonds of comparable weights.
