If you have interest in Eastern North Carolina Tidewater history and architecture, this painting may be a fine addition to your home or collection. It is an oil on board of the Sanderlin House in Belcross, Camden County. There is quite a bit of history written on a card on the back board that describes the family members of the house in the late 19th century. Camden is the courthouse town for Camden County. It is a small town located on the east side of the Pasquotank River, a few miles from Elizabeth City. Belcross is an area just outside of town. Apparently two near-identical houses were built ca 1840’s by the Sanderlin brothers, William and Joseph. One was left to ruin and disappeared, the other seems to possibly remain. In any event, per the information included, this is a view of the house by artist Miss Ella Bidgood, ca 1895. An Ella Bidgood, born in Baltimore in 1855, has been identified and she was a resident of Norfolk, Virginia with her family in the 1900 census. She is likely the artist of this painting. It is painted in a somewhat naive style but competently shows details of the house in nice, vivid colors. The painting is not signed but the information on the back side seems completely reliable. The painting itself is oil on board and measures 12” x 18”. It has been recently cleaned and varnished. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a substantial gold painted frame of the period with interesting detailing. Overall framed measurements are 19” x 24”. The frame is in good solid condition with no issues to report, other than expected very minor age-related wear. What an extraordinary chest of drawers! The top is plain with a bullnose edge and the sides are nicely paneled. The front corners of the case are boldly reeded and toward the top a sprig of lily of the valley is delicately carved inside the reed. Above this is a massive scrolled acanthus leaf corbel, appearing to support the top. The drawers are more or less equal in depth with faux panels created by an applied mitered molding with a bead running round the inside. The knobs are rare; hardly ever seen They are the classic shape of the ceramic knobs found on much Central European vernacular furniture, except these are carved in wood. The gourd-like feet have similar contours. The oak was finished in dark tones and then was painted over in buttermilk. At some time it was painted white and has worn or been rubbed through to the earlier layers. The result is a delightful piece that need not be confined to the bedroom, but rather can be enjoyed wherever some whimsical storage...

Substantial signet ring of tourmaline, with a delicately carved and pristine intaglio of a 2 horned goat mounted to a gorgeous gold band. The goat has important significance first in the Bible, representing sacrifice, protection, and guidance. A modern twist on the image of the goat is the acronym "greatest of all time", commonly referred to as the GOAT. The goat is also the symbol for Capricorn, the sign for everyone with birthdays between Dec 22 and Jan 19. The intaglio is so detailed that even the texture of the animal’s fur can be seen and felt when you run your hand across the face of the stone. The goat has a pair of horns, ears and even leg joints that are meticulously carved. The gold band is actually two gold bands circling the stone and forming a continuous double band throughout the ring. The band continues in in a circular pattern around the side mounted tourmalines to the back of the ring, with the repeating circular motifs establishing a strong design element. In addition to the tourmaline central stone, there are 2 cabochon cut tourmalines mounted to each side. The ring is open in the back and the goat intaglio is easily seen both from the front of the ring and back.
