Ian Sanderson (born 1951 Scotland, died 2020 Spain) was a Scottish photographer.
Over the course of a 35-year career, Ian crafted captivating images and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints.
For much of his professional journey, he thrived as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer eventually focusing on his personal artistic work during his final years.
Towards the conclusion of his life's path, Ian and his partner revived two 19th-century printing methods in their studio - Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate - culminating in a significant retrospective exhibition in Barcelona sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation.
The Platinum and Palladium prints were particularly noteworthy as they were printed on transparent vellum paper with pure gold or silver bonded to the back, rendering each piece a unique and timeless work of art. Through their artisanal techniques, they created rare and personalized works. Ian Sanderson was one of the few artists worldwide specializing in this type of production. Now, Ian's partner continues their shared legacy, still creating Platinum Palladium prints as well as silver gelatin photographs.

"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour.
I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects.
I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell, Glasgow boys: Guthrie Lavery, Henry... and Joan Eardley...

Each line is the trace of a movement. The work is constructed by accumulation, color on color and line upon line. The strokes are like a bridge between two shores, a web that links fragments. Intensity is an essential component of my work and forms part of a vital dynamic. The experiential operates as a time shift: a difference that is installed on the continuum of reality; a gap that lets you see what is hidden from the view. The pencil tip releases material into the interstices of the paper, covering the paper grain; and if it does not, another stroke will cover this supporting skin. It is an exploration of how resilience is not a rigid stance, but a fluid process—a journey that requires both the gentleness to bend with change and the energy to face it

In today’s world, where the pace of life often feels as unpredictable as the weather, my art speaks to the universal experiences of growth, adaptation, and the quiet strength that lies beneath the surface of every turbulent wave.
