Catalan Post-Impressionist Mountain Landscape, El Montmell Spain Artist: Mossèn Ramon Gimbert Canals Title: Font de Volta, Montmell Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 x 73 cm / 23.62 x 28.74 in Signature: Signed lower right, “R. Gimbert” Date: 1965 Frame: Unframed Condition: Good vintage condition, consistent with age. Please see photographs for full details. Inscription: Inscribed, titled and dated on the reverse: “Font de Volta – Montmell – 1965” Origin: Catalonia, Spain Description Atmospheric 1965 Catalan Post-Impressionist landscape by Mossèn Ramon Gimbert Canals, depicting the mountainous surroundings of El Montmell in the Baix Penedès region of Tarragona, Catalonia. The painting is specifically identified on the reverse as “Font de Volta – Montmell – 1965”. The Font del Montmell is located in the recreational area of La Joncosa del Montmell, a mountainous landscape in southern Catalonia traditionally associated with the walking route known as the Volta al Montmell. Gimbert presents the landscape through an intensely Mediterranean palette of emerald greens, turquoise blues, ochres and luminous whites. The composition opens from a secluded foreground garden bordered by stone walls and dense vegetation toward the monumental mountain range beyond. A large tree rising at the right edge acts almost as a natural architectural element, framing the view and creating a powerful sense of depth. The handling of the paint is especially attractive. Areas of broad, vigorous brushwork alternate with thicker passages of impasto, particularly across the mountains, vegetation and cloudy sky. Rather than describing every detail literally, Gimbert builds the landscape through colour, texture and light, giving the scene a distinctly modern and expressive character. Painted in 1965, only four years before the artist’s death, the work belongs to Gimbert’s late period and shows the confidence of a painter deeply familiar with the Catalan countryside. El Montmell was not an isolated subject in his production. Other documented works by the artist depict the same area, confirming its importance within his landscape painting. The combination of identifiable location, original reverse inscription, strong Mediterranean character and substantial 60 x 73 cm format makes this a particularly representative example of mid-20th-century Catalan landscape painting. Biography Mossèn Ramon Gimbert Canals was born in Sant Quirze del Vallès on 25 May 1882 and died in Barcelona on 31 July 1969. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1908 while simultaneously developing a sustained career as a painter. These biographical dates are recorded by the Arxiu Diocesà de Barcelona. His artistic production concentrated principally on landscape, especially views of Catalonia, rural architecture, gardens, mountain scenery and coastal subjects. El Montmell appears repeatedly among his known works, alongside subjects including Horta, Camprodon and maritime scenes. Gimbert participated actively in the Barcelona art world. His most significant documented exhibition was a solo presentation at the prestigious Galeries Laietanes in Barcelona from 28 December 1935 to 10 January 1936. The exhibition is recorded in the Institut d’Estudis Catalans repertory of individual art exhibitions in Catalonia and included a catalogue listing the exhibited works and their prices. His paintings belong to the broader tradition of 20th-century Catalan landscape painting, combining naturalistic observation with increasingly free brushwork, expressive colour and a distinctly Mediterranean sensitivity to light. Artistic Inspiration The work belongs to the rich tradition of Catalan modern landscape painting developed from the late 19th century onward. Its expressive treatment of colour and vegetation recalls the Mediterranean landscapes of Joaquim Mir, while its luminous atmosphere and direct observation of nature can also be related to painters such as Eliseu Meifrèn, Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquim Sunyer. Rather than suggesting direct stylistic dependence, these comparisons place Gimbert within the wider Catalan and Spanish tradition in which landscape became a vehicle for colour, atmosphere and personal expression. Floral Still Life with Roses, 19th Century Spanish Oil Painting

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Floral Still Life with Roses, 19th Century Spanish Oil Painting Artist: José María Murillo Bracho Birth / death: Seville, 1827 – Málaga, 1882 Title: Floral Still Life Technique: Oil on canvas Artwork size: 34 × 45 cm / 13.4 × 17.7 in Framed size: 56 × 67 cm / 22 × 26.4 in Signature: Signed lower left Frame: Yes, ornate gilded frame included Condition: Good overall condition, with normal signs of age and conservation consistent with a 19th-century painting. The frame shows wear consistent with age. Subject: Floral still life Style: 19th-century Spanish painting, floral realism, Andalusian school Description Elegant 19th-century floral still life painted in oil on canvas by José María Murillo Bracho, a Spanish artist from Seville especially known for his refined flower paintings, fruit compositions and still lifes. The work presents a horizontal bouquet of flowers arranged on a neutral surface, with white roses, vivid red blossoms, mauve flowers, golden yellow accents and deep green leaves. The composition combines naturalistic precision, delicate color and a carefully balanced sense of light, creating a serene and highly decorative image. The contrast between the luminous white flowers at the center, the intense red blooms and the sober blue-grey background gives the painting great visual richness. The brushwork is detailed and sensitive, particularly in the petals and foliage, where the artist’s almost botanical attention to form and texture can be clearly appreciated. This painting is especially attractive within Murillo Bracho’s production because floral still life was one of the genres most closely associated with his work. The piece also retains an ornate gilded frame, enhancing its classical presence and making it highly suitable for a refined interior. A charming antique Spanish flower painting, ideal for collectors of 19th-century Spanish art, floral still lifes, academic realism, Andalusian painting and decorative European oil paintings. A bouquet that does not fade, which is already more than can be said for most modern enthusiasm. Artist Biography José María Murillo Bracho was a Spanish painter born in Seville in 1827 and died in Málaga in 1882. He is also sometimes referenced as José María Murillo y Bracho or José María Bracho Murillo. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville, one of the most important artistic institutions in Andalusia during the 19th century. His work developed within the Spanish academic tradition, with a particular focus on still lifes, flowers and fruit compositions. Murillo Bracho was connected to both Seville and Málaga, and his painting reflects the refined bourgeois taste of 19th-century Andalusia. His works are appreciated for their careful realism, elegant composition, delicate chromatic range and meticulous treatment of floral subjects. Floral still lifes are among the most representative and desirable aspects of his production, combining decorative beauty with technical precision and a distinctly classical Spanish sensibility. Artistic Inspiration This painting belongs to the long European tradition of floral still life, connecting 19th-century Spanish academic painting with the broader history of flower painting. It may appeal to collectors interested in artists and traditions associated with Henri Fantin-Latour, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Rachel Ruysch, Juan de Arellano and classical European botanical painting. With its serene composition, precise floral detail and elegant color harmony, the work is well suited for collectors of antique still lifes, Spanish School paintings, Andalusian art, academic realism and refined decorative interiors. Cadaqués Costa Brava Mediterranean Harbor with Fishing Boats and Whitewashed

By Rafael Duran Benet

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Cadaqués Costa Brava Mediterranean Harbor with Fishing Boats and Whitewashed Village Artist: Rafael Durán Benet (1931–2015) Medium: Oil on canvas laid on cardboard Dimensions: 13 x 16.1 in (33 x 41 cm) Frame: Unframed Origin: Spain Subject: Cadaqués, Costa Brava, Mediterranean harbor, fishing boats, whitewashed village Style: Post-Impressionist, Mediterranean Modernism Period: Mid-20th century Condition: Good vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with an original period artwork. Please refer to the photographs for full details. Signature: Signed lower right “R. Duran” Description A highly atmospheric Mediterranean coastal scene by Rafael Durán Benet, depicting the unmistakable visual world of Cadaqués on the Costa Brava, with traditional fishing boats resting in the foreground and a cluster of luminous whitewashed houses rising behind the harbor. The composition combines several of the most desirable subjects in 20th-century Catalan painting: Cadaqués, the Costa Brava, Mediterranean architecture, fishing boats and brilliant coastal light. Durán Benet constructs the scene with broad, confident brushwork and a sophisticated palette of turquoise, ivory, ochre, green and deep violet. The boats are reduced to strong, elegant shapes, while the white façades of the village dissolve into soft planes of light and color. Rather than pursuing photographic detail, the artist captures the atmosphere of Cadaqués through rhythm, light and simplified form. The turquoise water creates a luminous horizontal band across the composition, while the boats and architecture establish a balanced sequence of shapes characteristic of his mature Mediterranean landscapes. The painting evokes the quiet charm of the historic fishing village of Cadaqués, one of the most iconic artistic destinations on the Costa Brava and one of the great recurring subjects of modern Catalan art. Biography Rafael Durán Benet was born in Terrassa, Catalonia, in 1931 and died in Barcelona in 2015. He was the nephew of Rafael Benet i Vancells, the important Catalan painter, critic and art historian, who played a significant role in his early artistic development. During the 1950s Durán Benet settled in Cadaqués, on the Costa Brava, where the Mediterranean landscape became one of the defining themes of his career. The village, its harbor, whitewashed architecture, fishing boats and surrounding coastline provided him with an enduring visual vocabulary. Cadaqués was also one of the great artistic meeting points of 20th-century Europe. During his years there, Durán Benet moved within the cultural environment associated with figures such as Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso. His first solo exhibition was held in 1958 at Sala Vayreda in Barcelona. He later exhibited extensively in Barcelona, Madrid and Cadaqués, as well as internationally in cities including Paris, London, Houston and Los Angeles. He also maintained a longstanding relationship with the prestigious Sala Parés in Barcelona. In 1980, Durán Benet received the Henri Forman Prize from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 2011, the city of Terrassa honored him with a retrospective exhibition at the Sala Muncunill. His paintings are immediately recognizable for their luminous Mediterranean palette, simplified architecture, expressive brushwork and ability to transform everyday coastal scenes into poetic studies of light and atmosphere. Artistic Inspiration This work belongs directly to the great tradition of Mediterranean and Costa Brava landscape painting that shaped modern Catalan art during the 20th century. The subject of Cadaqués places the painting within a particularly important artistic context. The village became internationally associated with artists including Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, while its extraordinary light, rocky coastline, fishing boats and whitewashed architecture attracted generations of painters. Durán Benet interprets this world through a personal post-impressionist language. His broad brushwork, simplified forms and flattened perspective give the composition a modern character, while his sensitivity to atmosphere preserves the intimacy and authenticity of traditional Mediterranean landscape painting. A particularly appealing example of Spanish and Catalan Mediterranean painting, combining several highly searchable and collectible subjects: Cadaqués, Costa Brava, Mediterranean harbor, fishing boats, whitewashed village and Spanish modern art. Cadaqués paintings are especially sought after for their association with the artistic heritage of the Costa Brava and with figures such as Salvador Dalí, Picasso and Duchamp. This work offers that cultural connection while retaining the decorative immediacy and color that make Mediterranean paintings especially attractive in contemporary interiors. Its compact 13 x 16.1 inch format makes it particularly versatile for collectors and interior designers seeking authentic European art with strong regional identity. Ideal for collectors of Spanish Modern Art, Catalan Painting, Cadaqués Painting, Costa Brava Art, Mediterranean Landscape, Harbor Painting, Marine Painting, Fishing Boat Art, Post-Impressionism and Mid-Century European Painting.
