Tom Sawyer Detective by Mark Twain: 19th C. Framed Colored Poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Alamo, CA
This lithographic colored advertising poster entitled "Tom Sawyer Detective, A New Story by Mark Twain" was created by Edward Penfield in 1897 for Harper & Brothers. The artist's signature appears in the plate in the lower left. The poster depicts a man in a long black bathing suit sitting with his knees up, aimlessly smoking a cigarette, but looking out of the corner of his eyes at a woman in a olive green dress and tan blouse and a black hat, who sits to his left with her head propped in her left hand and a bored or concerned look on her face. The look on the faces of the couple creates an air of mystery. The title of the book is printed in red in the upper left and the issue "Harper's August" in bold letters in the lower poster. The poster promotes a new book by Mark Twain that was published initially in two issues of Harper's Monthly and also in book form by Harper & Brothers in 1896. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", published in 1876, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", published in 1884, and "Tom Sawyer Abroad", also published in 1894. The plot of the book involves Tom Sawyer attempting to solve a mysterious murder. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of his friend Huck Finn...

'Tall Tulips' bespoke watercolor
By Gary Bukovnik
Located in Burlingame, CA
'Tall Tulips' original watercolor painted in 2021 in subtle shades of pink with hints of yellow in a clear blue vase from Cleveland-born and educated Gary Bukovnik who has lived in California for over 40 years. Bukovnik’s art conveys a monumental quality. Primarily using the mediums of watercolor, monotype, and lithograph, Bukovnik fuses sensual vitality with fluid yet powerful colorations, creating floral images of great depth and intensity. The paper is 40 x 20 inches. Ships flat and unframed. Although professional framing is available upon request. This is a stunning and wonderful work of art from Gary Bukovnik. In 2003 and 2005, the American Academy in Rome invited Bukovnik to attend the academy as a Visiting Artist and provided him with a room and studio for six weeks. In 2001, he was selected to create a poster for the prestigious List Collection, which creates posters to commemorate programs at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Lincoln Center past contributors have included Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray, and Donald Sultan. Solo exhibitions include Caldwell Snyder Gallery in San Francisco and in St. Helena, CA; Trajan Gallery in Carmel, CA; Campton Gallery in New York City; Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA; Elins Eagles-Smith Gallery and A.C.T. Gallery in San Francisco, the Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland and the Erickson Fine Art Gallery in Healdsburg. Other recent exhibitions have been organized by the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Paula Brown Gallery, Toledo, Neuhoff Gallery, New York; Lisa Kurts Gallery, Memphis; Irving Galleries, Palm Beach; Galerie Kutter, Luxembourg; the Southern Alleghenies. Museum of Art, Johnstown, Pennsylvania; Chin Show Cultural Center, Taipei; Takashimaya, Tokyo; the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh; and Brevard Museum of Art, Melbourne, Florida. Among the artwork displayed at the Brevard Museum of Art was a tapestry based on a Bukovnik watercolor and hand-woven in Aubusson, France by Atelier Raymond Picaud, weavers since the eventeenth century. Atelier Raymond Picaud has been at the forefront of progressive tapestry firms since the 1930s, focusing on images of modern artists such as Alexander Calder, Georges Braque, and Helen Frankenthaler. Bukovnik’s watercolors and monotypes are the subject of Flowers: Gary Bukovnik Watercolors & Monotypes, published by Harry N. Abrams, New York. This book includes a foreword by James J. White, curator at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation; an interview with the artist by Robert Flynn Johnson, curator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; and an essay about Bukovnik and the depiction of flowers in art...

Surya
By Willard Dixon
Located in Burlingame, CA
The paintings from Willard Dixon's "NEWS series" are generally taken from small black and white newspaper photos from the artist's daily reading of the news. He changes the images somewhat by cropping them, taking things out, adding color, etc. But the image is definitely something seen originally by someone else. “I must say”, says Dixon, “I have rather strong feelings about these images myself. I see them at least in part as an homage to the intrepid photographers on the front lines who are telling truth to the world about what’s actually going on out there.” This is 'Surya', which is hindu for sun; A 48 x 60 inch oil on canvas painting depicting a kaleidoscope of colorful women...

Untitled #4
By Jerry Opper
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Untitled #1" c.1970 is a colors pastel and crayon on thick paper by American artist Jerry Opper, 1924-2014. It is hand signed in pencil at the lower right corner by the artist. The image size is 26.5 x 20.5 inches, sheet size is 28.5 x 22.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, there are pastel marks on the margin all around the artwork and also on the back, see picture #1. About the artist: Jerry Opper was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 5, 1924. He moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1933. After graduating from Hollywood High School, he worked in movie studios and attended art classes at Chouinard Art Institute. In May 1942, Opper was drafted into the army and was then able to study at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center while his outfit was stationed in Colorado. Later he was sent to Guam and was discharged in December 1945. Opper returned to Chouinard and his work in movie studios until 1947, when he moved to San Francisco. He enrolled as a full-time student at the California School of Fine Arts (now SFAI) and received his diploma in June of 1950. In 1948, Opper met his wife Gertrud Ruth Friedmann, daughter of artist Gustav Friedmann, whose works are also in the Lost Art Salon collection. It was love at first sight and a few weeks after their first encounter at the Black Cat in San Francisco's North Beach, they got married and enjoyed a passionate, life-long romance. Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative. He was above all a family man with the pride of having raised two exceptional daughters, Erika and Jody. Year after year, Opper would painstakingly craft their Halloween costumes...

Tuko-See-Mathla, A Seminole Chief: A Hand-colored McKenney & Hall Lithograph
By McKenney & Hall
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled "Tuko-See-Mathla, A Seminole Chief, No. 106", published by Rice, Rutter & Co. in 1865. For his portrait, painted by Charles Bird King, Tuko-See-Mathla wore a colorful outfit, primarily of red and blue with tassels and a matching headdress, a necklace including his presidential peace medal, two metallic bands on each arm, beautiful high moccasin boots and he carries a rifle. He appears to be standing in a desert landscape. This original beautifully hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph is presented in a cream colored mat (adhered at the top), suitable for framing with a protective clear sleeve. The mat measures 13.88" x 11.75" and the sheet measures 10.63" x 7.38. There is one tiny spot in the lower portion of the left and right margins and minimal discoloration at the left and right edges (obscured by the mat), but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. Col. Thomas J. McKenney was Superintendant of The Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1816 until 1830. He was one of a very few government officials to defend American Indian interests and attempt to preserve their culture. He travelled to Indian lands meeting the Native American leaders. He brought with him an accomplished artist, James Otto Lewis...
