1885 America's Cup Sailing Yachts: Set of 3 Original 19th C. Engravings
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a set of three woodcut engravings produced in 1885 to commemorate the sailing yacht trials competition to determine the team to represent the United States in the America's Cup races off the New Jersey coast in that same year. These three beautiful woodcut engravings are part of a group of six equally attractive prints, all framed identically in gold scrolled frames with pleasing light grey French mats each with a medium grey band. Each frame measures 16.13" x 17.25" x 0.5". See Item Reference #LU117325094852 to view the other three images. These may be purchased individually for $1,075/each, as a set of three for $2,875/3 or as a set of six for $5,575/6. Any number of these engravings would make for a striking display grouping. Three American racing yachts, the Puritan, the Priscilla and the Bedouin, participating in the 1885 America’s Cup trials off the coast of New Jersey are shown in their qualifying races. The Puritan, owned by several members of the Eastern Yacht Club...

Succulents 01 - large format photograph from the series Bushes and Succulents
By Mona Kuhn
Located in San Francisco, CA
From the series 'Bushes and Succulents' (2018), Mona Kuhn’s artistic response to the ongoing currents in contemporary feminism. Reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe’s floral paintings, your eyes wander around the graceful lines, not knowing exactly what you are looking at. The images are a celebration of the female essence - confident, raw and elegant, yet confrontational and unapologetic. Succulents 01 (2018) 60" x 45" / 152cm x 114cm edition of 5 + 1AP 40" x 30" / 102cm x 76cm edition of 8 + 2AP limited edition photograph printed under artist supervision + accompanied by signed artist certificate: artist signature labels are 8x10 in size signed, editioned, dated and titled by the artist, and stamped for authenticity label is placed centered on verso of the mounted print __________________ About the artist Acclaimed for her contemporary depictions, Kuhn is considered a leading artist in the world of figurative discourse. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, the underlying theme of her work is her reflection on humanity’s longing for spiritual connection and solidarity. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art. For the past two decades, the Los-Angeles based artist's works have been shown steadily, revealing an astonishing consistency in technique, of subject and of purpose. In 2001, Kuhn’s photographs were first seen by an influential audience during the exhibition at Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Kuhn’s distinct aesthetic has propelled her as one of the most collectible contemporary art photographers—her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she is represented by galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Mona Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Kuhn's monograph titled Bushes and Succulents has been published by Stanley/Barker Editions, with a debut at Jeu de Paume in Paris, in 2019. A stunning career retrospective of Mona Kuhn's works has been published by Thames & Hudson, Spring 2021. Kuhn's forthcoming publication Kings Road, will be published and released by Steid this Fall 2021. Mona Kuhn’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, Perez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Kiyosato Museum in Japan. Kuhn's work has been exhibited at The Louvre Museum and Le Bal in Paris; The Whitechapel Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London; Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland; Leopold Museum in Vienna Austria, The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver Canada, Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan and Australian Centre for Photography. "Neptune Washington", Fisherman Polling His River Boat in the Rain by Ron Adams
Located in Alamo, CA
"Neptune Washington" is a large contemporary lithograph by Ron Adams (1934- ), created in 1996. It depicts a muscular African-American fisherman polling his fishing boat in a river in the rain. Adams distinctive rendering of Neptune conveys his great strength, as well as the grace, fluidity and balance of his body. He is barefoot and shirtless, dressed in striped overalls with his right shoulder strap undone. A bucket of fish sits next to his left foot, while fishing line, an open tin can and a frog are seen on a wet bench in front of Neptune. A long-necked white bird (crane) sits on a log floating by in the river near the opposite shore. Ominous storm clouds are present in the background over trees, brush and rocks along the opposite river bank. The lithograph is printed on handmade deckle-edged paper and presented with a museum style floating mount in a black wood frame with a thick cream mat and glazed with UV protected plexiglass. It is signed in pencil in the right lower corner along with the date, '96. The title "Neptune Washington" is inscribed in pencil in the lower margin in the center and initials HGI are in the lower left. The initials HGI may stand for Hand Graphics Institute, which Adams founded in New Mexico. The initials rather than the usual edition number (which consisted of 70), possibly signify an artist proof or possibly a Hors-Commerce (before trade) printing. The print is in excellent condition. The frame measures 38" x 30.25" x 1.25". Ron Adams is a prominent African-American master printmaker. His detailed depictions of African-American musicians, craftsmen, folk heroes and everyday people have made him one of the top figurative artists and printmakers in the country. He has worked with and taught many other well-known artists, including Frank Stella, Charles White, John Biggers, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Jones...

Column of Trajan in Rome: A Framed Original 19th C. Etching by Luigi Rossini
By Luigi Rossini
Located in Alamo, CA
This early 19th century etching entitled "Veduta dello scavo del Foro Trajano" was created by Luigi Rossini and included in his publication "Le Antichita Romane" (The Rome of Antiquity), published in Rome in 1823. It depicts the historical victory column of Trajan standing amidst the rubble of broken columns that remain around it. The etching is presented in a black wood frame with a light brown outer mat and a dark brown inner mat. There are several frame abrasions. The print and mats are in very good condition. The frame measures 27" high, 29.07" wide and 0.5" deep. The print is framed and matted in the identical style as the another etching of an ancient Roman landmark, the Piazza Navona, which is also listed on 1stdibs, see item # LU117326144172. The pair would make an attractive display grouping of Roman architecture. A discount is available for purchase of the pair of prints. Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) like his predecessors, Giovanni Piranesi (1720–1778) and Giuseppi Vasi (1710-1782), was an architect and artist. Like Piranesi and Vasi, he wanted to glorify the architecture of ancient Rome, which he felt was deteriorating and needed to be documented. Several of the ruins he illustrated have, in fact, since disappeared leaving only his images as a record of their appearance. His images of the grand edifices of the city dramatically depict the power and glory...
