A Dynamic 1930s Boxing Match Painting by Famed Chicago Artist, Francis Chapin

By Francis Chapin

Located in Chicago, IL

A dynamic, colorful 1930s painting of a boxing match in Mexico by famed Chicago Modern artist Francis Chapin. Painted during one of the artist's early trips to Mexico, an exceptional painting showing Chapin's steadfast interest in sporting scenes, particularly boxing matches. Image size: 12 x 28 inches. Framed size: 15 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington and Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...

Located in Chicago, IL

A large, vibrant 1940s American Modernist still life painting of a cast iron pot, squash and ladle by notable Chicago woman artist. Flora Schofield. Oil on canvas, dating circa 1947. Artwork size: 28 1/2 x 20 inches. Framed size: 34 x 26 inches. Signed "Schofield" lower left. A avid painter, print maker and sculptor, Flora Schofield (Schoenfield), was born in Lanark, Illinois in 1871. Schoenfield also studied with Charles Hawthorne, B.J.O Nordfeldt and William Zorach in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She studied with Albert Gleizes, Fernand Leger and Natalia Goncharova in Paris, France. In 1923, Schofield’s abstractions caused a split at the venerable Chicago Society of Artists. When her artwork was was accepted by the jury, the notable Impressionist painter Pauline Palmer and the notable Modernist painter Carl Hoeckner got into a row that ended-up splitting the group. The Impressionists then broke away into their own organization called the ”Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors”. Dessert - Still Life Table Setting with Fruit, Wine and Flowers, Oil on Panel

By John Hrehov

Located in Chicago, IL

The artist is a master at storytelling. He sets the stage for the viewer to bring the events to a particular scene. Here, the artist has set two wine glasses, napkins and a small plate of desserts on a geometrically patterned table cloth, draping so it almost appears to be falling over the frame. The viewer is required to ask the questions about the scene but the answers may only lie in their own imagination. The painting, which is painted on canvas then mounted to a panel, is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 21 x 30 inches. One Such Morning - Complex Interior Scene with Still Life and Multiple Figures

One Such Morning - Complex Interior Scene with Still Life and Multiple Figures

By Benjamin Duke

Located in Chicago, IL

One Such Morning by Ben Duke captures a fleeting moment suspended between intimacy and observation. Bathed in warm, early light, a young woman stands before a mirror with eyes closed, seemingly absorbed in a private reverie. The painting layers interior space and reflection, blending the figure, the room, and a cluttered tabletop of fruit, vessels, and domestic objects into a richly orchestrated composition. Duke’s expressive brushwork and contrasting passages of warm pinks and cool blues create a sense of both stillness and movement, transforming an ordinary morning scene into a meditation on presence, memory, and the quiet poetry of everyday life. A Charming 1920's Painting of Mother & Child, Illustration after Norman Rockwell

By Walter Burt Adams

Located in Chicago, IL

A Charming 1920s American Illustration Study Based on the Artwork of Norman Rockwell by Notable Chicago Modern Artist, Walter Burt Adams (Am. 1903-1990). A well executed early figurative work by the artist, depicting a bemusing scene of the artist's mother and brother, as she patiently stands beside him while he dresses unenthusiastically for an impending violin lesson. Artwork size: 24 x 20 inches, oil on canvas, accompanied with the original frame (framed size: 29 1/2 x 23 3/4 inches). Signed "Walter Burt Adams" and dated 1923 lower right. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Walter Burt Adams was a dedicated painter of the American Scene and a singular personality among his peers in the Chicago Modern Art community. His no-nonsense manner, devotion to his craft and sardonic sense of humor characterize a man whose paintings capture life in and around Chicago between the early 1920s and the late 1970s. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin just after the turn of the last century, Walter Burt Adams spent his childhood in Fargo, North Dakota and began his artistic education there through a correspondence cartooning class as a boy. Zum Schwarzen Ferkel - (The Black Piglet) Vibrant Scene of a Group in a Bar

By Benjamin Duke

Located in Chicago, IL

[From Ben Duke] The following is from Wikipedia, but I learned of this spot after getting into August Strindberg novels. "Zum Schwarzen Ferkel," translated as "The Black Piglet," was a historic tavern located at the corner of Unter den Linden and Neue Wilhelmstraße in Berlin. Notable for its cultural and historical significance, the tavern was a central meeting point for Nordic writers and artists in the 1890s. It was frequented by figures such as August Strindberg, Edvard Munch, and the Polish writer Stanisław Przybyszewski, among others. The tavern's original name was Gustav Türkes Weinhandlung und Probierstube, owned by Gustav Türke, and it was also known as "The Cloister." The name "Zum Schwarzen Ferkel" was coined by Strindberg, who thought an Armenian wine-sack hanging over the entrance resembled a black piglet. This quirky name was enthusiastically accepted by both the owner and the patrons. August Strindberg, a Swedish playwright and novelist, played a significant role in the tavern's history. After moving to Berlin in 1892, he became a regular at the tavern and a leading figure among the Nordic and German artistic community that gathered there. The tavern was not only a place for socializing but also a hub of intellectual and artistic exchange, with members engaging in vibrant discussions and forming significant relationships, both personal and professional. Edvard Munch, the Norwegian painter, also became a regular after his arrival in Berlin in 1892. The tavern saw its share of drama, including romantic entanglements and artistic disputes. One notable figure was Dagny Juel, a Norwegian music student who became involved with several members of the circle and was later tragically murdered in Tbilisi in 1901. The tavern's influence extended into the literary and artistic works of its patrons. For example, Adolf Paul wrote about his experiences and the people he met at the Ferkel in his book "Strindberg-Erinnerungen und -Briefe," published in 1914. Strindberg's novel "Klostret" ("The Cloister"), published posthumously in 1966, also drew from his experiences at the tavern. Unfortunately, the original building that housed Zum Schwarzen Ferkel was destroyed during the Second World War. Today, its legacy lives on through the stories and works of the artists and writers who once gathered there. Wikkipedia. Jennifer unveils her bare breast, luring her unsuspecting rapist towards her so that she may seek her revenge. Should her morals be questioned? It makes no difference to her animal companion. This dog’s family was murdered and his response is to bite on a pair of dentures. Morality is exclusive to humanity. Nature simply carries forward. Featuring the films "I Spit on Your Grave", 1978, "High Tension", 2003 and "Angst", 1983. Georgia Hinaris I Spit on Your Angst oil on panel 28h x 56w in 71.12h x 142.24w cm GHS012 Horror films are the most profound and visceral of films, garnering the most extreme responses: vehement hatred and cultish admiration. Horror elicits a controlled neurosis while exposing the rejected weaknesses and brutalities of humanity. I embrace the power of cinema and its ability to alter perception, as it is media that is a reflection of our primordial desires. I’m fascinated by concepts involving the limits of human perception, the ambiguity of morality in relation to nature, the paradoxical nature of reality, and the human struggle to reckon with uncertainty. Humans bear the burden of being as we are, all caught in a flux of unbelievable cognitive abilities and animalistic instincts. Every painting is in its own universe and I cater to it. Nothing is precious. Chaos is embraced.
