BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN FRANCOIS DEBONGNIE
Jean-Francois Debongnie, born 1968, a native of Brussels, has been resident in Singapore since 1989. Trained as a photographer then a self-taught painter, Jean-Francois favors large canvases on which he explores the themes that inspire him in series such as “Red flowers”, “Summer”, “Dancing in the wind” and “Landscape – China”.
In all these series Jean-Francois brings to life flowers – both as iconographic floral signatures which capture the essential qualities of a flower rather than strict botanical representations and as part of a landscape in fields growing wild amidst ripening grain. The use of Chinese ink adds a dramatic fluidity to all his works. At present, Jean Francois works and lives between Belgium and Singapore.

Dazzling Forest is a 2020 landscape work by Maki Kuchida. This is a much sought-after landscape work by Maki, demonstrating her delicate painting skills with so much details in one work - the nature environment, trees with various forms and shapes, the river, the reflection and the 3 colorful coyotes. Maki combines the Japanese style landscape painting technique with the Chinese one thus her landscape work is unique in its own way. The present work is one of the few paintings pre-dating Senkichiro Nasaka’s affiliation to the Gutai Group.
The particular choice of means and technique, inspired by Senkichiro Nasaka’s mastery of both Japanese and Western painting, conveys the semblance of geological accretions, and clearly adheres to Jiro Yoshihara’s motto: “create what has never been done before”
About the Artist:
Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1923, in 1942 Senkichiro Nasaka entered the Kyoto City Painting University. where he was a contemporary of Kazuo Shiraga.
In 1960s he made a career switch from Japanese traditional painting to Western style oil painting, creating works under the influence of the informel style.
