The most prized and scared textiles of the Batak Tribes People of Northern Sumatra are “ragidup”, which translates to “life pattern”. These textiles are central to both an individuals life and will even follow them to the after life. The present textile is an example of an ulos ni tondi, which means “soul cloth”, a type of “ragidup”. This is gifted by the parents when a woman has her first child. It is believed these cloths are a supernatural object protecting one & their family throughout their life.
