Reginald Marsh (1898-1934), Tattoo-Shave-Haircut, etching, 1932. Signed, titled (“Tattoo-Haircut-Shave”), dedicated (“for Arnold Newman”), and annotated (“Fourth State. First of Two Prints”). Reference: Sasowsky 140. On cream wove paper. In very good condition, with small margins (as trimmed, slightly irregularly, by the artist) (slight foxing in margins), remains of prior hinging verso; 9 7/8 x 9 3/4, the sheet 10 15/16 x 10 5/8 inches; archival matting. A very fine rich black impression; we have not seen impressions of comparable quality on the market. Provenance: Estate of Arnold Newman. Arnold Newman (1918-2006) was one of the great 20th Century masters of photography, and a friend of many leading artists; it is appears that Marsh took special care in printing this impression for Newman. Sasowsky calls for 10 states of Tattoo-Shave, based largely on Marsh’s notes. But the states are not clearly delineated (e.g., his States 3 and 4, one proof each, are characterized by Marsh as “Engraving added”; no information is given for State 5). The design for the print was complete in the first state, and subsequent state changes were not, apparently, major. This impression does not appear to differ in etching lines from the final state impression shown in Sasowsky. Its inscription (as a Fourth State, by Marsh), as well as its rich inking and quality, attest to its being a proof before the edition (of about 34 impressions), but the state of this print (and, presumably of many of the other several proof impressions) cannot at this time be stated with confidence. Marsh printed this impression personally (we recall his famous answer to a question about the size of his editions: “Since I do practically all my own printing, I do not limit the edition. The buyer limits the edition – he rarely buys, I rarely print”). Tattoo-Shave-Haircut depicts a scene in the Bowery, a section of New York’s Lower East Side, during the Great Depression. American photographer Leonard Freed enjoyed documentary storytelling and as a "concerned photographer" his photography demonstrated humanitarian concerns. Woman Protestor, March on Washington, 1963 by Leonard Freed, is a 14" x 11" gelatin silver photograph, signed and stamped on verso (back of photo) by the estate, Brigitte Freed (wife of the photographer). The photo is in Leonard Freed's book “This Is the Day: The March on Washington'' (p. 50). The photographer travelled to New York, Washington, D.C., and throughout the South, capturing the daily lives of African-Americans. Documenting the 1960s Civil Rights Movement from the East Coast to the Deep South, Freed’s photo essay culminated in the book Black in White America, which contributed to Freed's becoming a well-known documentary photographer of 20th Century America. After Freed’s death in 2006 his widow, Brigitte Freed was inspired to compile a book on the March on Washington from her late husband’s archive because she heard then-Senator former President Barack Obama remark to an audience of civil rights activists, “I stand here because you walked.” The March on Washington series is a powerful visual testimony, capturing protests that culminated in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream'' speech, delivered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. Angelo Canevari’s Don Quixote is a 38 x 44 inch mix media sculpture. It is made of metal, resin, blue automotive paint, and cardboard. Angelo Canevari's work is often inspired by classical themes and myths. In this sculpture, he revisited with a modern interpretation the famous character of Don Quixote of La Mancha, in the Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Almost Baroque in it's curvilinear shape rendered by the interlacing blue lines, the horseman and the horse emanates a superb emotional tension that culminates in the horse's red eye and the horseman's red head. This sculpture is part of a very limited number of works that the artist created at the end of his life. It has been featured in a book written by renowned writer Andrea Camilleri. Angelo Canevari is an Italian sculptor who comes from a long lineage of artists active in Rome since the 17th century. This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his impressionistic works depicting the "Pont De La Concorde" bridge across the Seine in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the distance. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with figures and cars over the bridge and a man leaning against the edge overlooking the bright water and reflections. There is a boat lower right and we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The figures are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of fun and enjoyment from that sunny day at the Seine. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
