Painted Wood Assemblage Abstract Art Sculpture Painting Gordon Powell Modernist

Located in Surfside, FL

Gordon Powell (American, 1947-) Hand signed and dated verso. Trio 2006 Pine and gesso Dimensions: Framed 23 1/2” x 18” Gordon Powell received his M.F.A. from the University of Illinois in Chicago and his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute, where he now serves as a full adjunct professor. His many awards include the prestigious Prix de Rome and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago abstract artist Gordon Powell describes his work as having to do with “building, about putting things together to make a physical form.” He manipulates common objects and positions them in new and unexpected contexts. In this piece, Powell uses pieces of wood to create a sculptural relief. He forms a puzzle-like surface with carved and whitewashed pieces, joins them together to provide linear definition, and adds surface cuts in some areas. Notice how Powell allows the grains, imperfections and natural formations of the wood to be an integral part of his work. "In my practice I work with “fragments” which I make from old pattern paper templates, mdf, and paint. Laid out on the table or floor, the materials are cut into different shapes and the surfaces painted or marked. They are then brought together and arranged or composed into a form and then glued together. The process and choices are the result of improvisation; comparing one fragment next to another to see how they work together." The images and shapes are abstract. His style is similar to the collage and assemblage works of French artist Georges Noel, Arman and Cesar and American artist Cecil Touchon. Select Exhibitions Gordon Powell has participated in include the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, Racine Art Museum, Sculpture Center, New York, Roy Boyd Gallery Chicago and Los Angeles, Virgina Zabriskie Gallery, New York, Perimeter Gallery Chicago and New York City, the American Academy in Rome, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, and Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Select Collections include The Art Institute of Chicago, State of Illinois, City of Chicago, Rockford Art Museum, Racine Art Museum and the Elmhurst Art Museum. (see complete resume) Select Awards and Residencies include the Rome Prize (Prix de Rome), National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, School of the Art Institute Of Chicago Faculty Enrichment Grants, Yaddo Residency, Dora Maar House, Manerbe, France, American Academy in Rome Residencies, and Krems, Austria Residency, Karl Hofer Gesellschaft Residency, Berlin. Carlos Garcia de la Nuez (Cuba, 1959) 'Desde una Isla', 2005 engraving on paper Velin Arches 300 g. 28 x 39.8 in. (71 x 101 cm.) Edition of 99 Unframed ID: GAC-111 Hand-signed by author ___________________________________________________________ Carlos García de la Nuez. Born in Havana, Cuba, 1959. Lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico. He is a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists, whose works differentiated from other contemporaries, noticeably in their intentional distancing from political criticism as a form of expression. This generation was interested in establishing and legitimizing new values of art for art’s sake, gathering inspiration from art movements happening outside of Cuba. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1959, the artist’s paintings explore abstraction and semiotics through the use of color, texture and scale. García de la Nuez participated in the historic 1982 exhibition titled 4x4 with colleagues Gustavo Acosta, José Franco and Moses Finalé.  In 1979 García de la Nuez entered the San Alejandro Academy of Arts and in 1983 completed his studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. He received his Masters of Arts in 1988 from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, upon receiving a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation. He spent a decade working and living in Paris, where he exhibited across Europe and was selected to participate in a silkscreen portfolio, Kinderstem, published by Domberger-Edition in Germany that featured García de la Nuez along with Max Bill, Sol LeWitt, Keith Haring, Christo, among others. In the early 1990’s García de la Nuez relocated in Mexico City, where he currently works and lives.  The artist’s works have been exhibited in various museums around the world including Boston, New York, Miami, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Mexico City, San Jose, Panama City, Canada, Paris, Berlin, Stuttgart, London, Madrid, Moscow and Havana.  His work has been awarded the Painting Award 13 de Marzo...

P/A: 8, H.C.: 5 Unframed ID: CHI1038-013 Hand-signed by author It is documented in Chillida, E. (1999). Eduardo Chillida – Opus P. II 1973-1985. Chorus – Verlag, pp 290 – 291. Nr 82003. ____________________________________________________ He began his career in 1943 studying architecture at the University of Madrid, but in 1947 he dedicated himself to drawing and sculpture, and in 1948 he moved to Paris, then the world capital of the arts. Although he abandoned his studies, his work betrays his architectural training, showing an underlying sense of structural organization, as well as discipline in materials, planning of spatial relationships, and scale of elements. Over the years, the artist turned to materials that showed his investigations into conceptual questions and metaphysical concerns. Chillida's first stone and plaster creations oscillated between the human world and the natural world using figures and images of landscapes. Consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm, his works consider ways in which mass and volume contain space. His public works, which exist on a more massive scale, not only inhabit the space but also determine a qualifying space of their own.
