Robert Vernet-Bonfort (French, 1934-2017) LA VIEILLE MAISON Oil painting on canvas Hand signed lower right, signed and inscribed on verso In a heavy carved frame Dimensions: 19 ¼ x 23 ¾”, frame 29 x 33 Provenance: Cambridge Art Gallery, Brentwood, California. Born in Marseille, France in 1934, he began his life as a healthy, happy child. Rendered deaf by an early childhood illness, Vernet-Bonfort embraced visual arts in study and practice as a refuge from the silence of the outer world, permitting elaborate expression through a vivid and colourful visual language. He studied at L'école des Beaux-Arts in Marseille from 1948 to 1957. A frequently exhibited and lauded French artist active since the 1950's, Vernet-Bonfort's work demonstrates the intersection of old and new masters' technique, with a strong personal sensibility with an element of surrealism. Upon completion of his studies he was awarded the Prix Claverie, the first of many future accolades. The year of his graduation also marked his first gallery exhibition at the Galerie Reboul in Marseille. In the next decade Vernet-Bonfort exhibited in many French cities, earning many honours, including the Prix de l'U.N.A.M., for Young Mediterranean Artists He has exhibited over the years with Albert-Ernest De Carrier-Belleuse, Maximilien Luce, Jean Pesce, Lucien Guerber, Honore Jacquet, Georgette Nivert...

Painted Wood Assemblage Abstract Art Sculpture Painting Gordon Powell Modernist

Located in Surfside, FL

Gordon Powell (American, 1947-) Hand signed and dated verso. Trio 2006 Pine and gesso Dimensions: Framed 23 1/2” x 18” Gordon Powell received his M.F.A. from the University of Illinois in Chicago and his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute, where he now serves as a full adjunct professor. His many awards include the prestigious Prix de Rome and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work is in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago abstract artist Gordon Powell describes his work as having to do with “building, about putting things together to make a physical form.” He manipulates common objects and positions them in new and unexpected contexts. In this piece, Powell uses pieces of wood to create a sculptural relief. He forms a puzzle-like surface with carved and whitewashed pieces, joins them together to provide linear definition, and adds surface cuts in some areas. Notice how Powell allows the grains, imperfections and natural formations of the wood to be an integral part of his work. "In my practice I work with “fragments” which I make from old pattern paper templates, mdf, and paint. Laid out on the table or floor, the materials are cut into different shapes and the surfaces painted or marked. They are then brought together and arranged or composed into a form and then glued together. The process and choices are the result of improvisation; comparing one fragment next to another to see how they work together." The images and shapes are abstract. His style is similar to the collage and assemblage works of French artist Georges Noel, Arman and Cesar and American artist Cecil Touchon. Select Exhibitions Gordon Powell has participated in include the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, Racine Art Museum, Sculpture Center, New York, Roy Boyd Gallery Chicago and Los Angeles, Virgina Zabriskie Gallery, New York, Perimeter Gallery Chicago and New York City, the American Academy in Rome, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, and Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Select Collections include The Art Institute of Chicago, State of Illinois, City of Chicago, Rockford Art Museum, Racine Art Museum and the Elmhurst Art Museum. (see complete resume) Select Awards and Residencies include the Rome Prize (Prix de Rome), National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council Fellowships, School of the Art Institute Of Chicago Faculty Enrichment Grants, Yaddo Residency, Dora Maar House, Manerbe, France, American Academy in Rome Residencies, and Krems, Austria Residency, Karl Hofer Gesellschaft Residency, Berlin. Andrene Kauffman (American, 1905-1993) Alter Ego. Surrealist circus or zoo scene with flying animals on an abstract color saturated background. Oil on masonite. Hand signed ANKAU lower left. Dimensions: 24 x 30”. Frame 25 ½ x 31 ½”. There is a address label verso from Louise Dunn Yochim She was a well-known artist from Chicago in her time. Louise Yochim was born Luba Dichne in Zhitomir, Russia in 1909. She immigrated to Chicago, along with her parents and four siblings in 1924. Yochim studied at the European Gymnasium and at the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving her Master’s Degree and Doctorate (1962) in Education from the University of Chicago. She was married to notable Chicago artist Maurice Yochim. Yochim exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, the Union League Club, Chicago, IL, the University Club of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others, becoming one of the leading women artists in Chicago. Yochim published three books, the most notable being “Role and Impact: The Chicago Society of Artists”, included in the Illinois Women Artists Project. Camille Andrene Kauffman (1905 – 1993) was an American painter and educator who created a mural for the post office mural project in Ida Grove, Iowa. She completed twenty-five colorful murals and seven sculptures throughout Chicago, as part of the art projects for the New Deal's Section of Painting and Sculpture. Later, she completed seventeen ceramic murals for the 3rd Unitarian Church, which was designated as a Chicago Landmark in 1960. In addition to her artwork and exhibitions, Kaufman taught art for forty-one years at various universities in Chicago, Rockford, Illinois, and Valparaiso, Indiana. Her work bears the influence of Surrealism and Cubism. Camille Andrene Kauffmann was born on April 19, 1905, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, to Charlotte Camille (née Henriksen) and George Francis Kauffman Kauffman came from an artistic family. Her father was a dress designer and her paternal grandfather, Francis Xavier Kauffman designed furniture. Her brother G. Francis would become a cartoonist and illustrator. She attended Austin Community Academy High School of Chicago before entering the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1926 and winning the John Quincy Adams Fellowship from the Institute for a year of continued study abroad. In 1927, Kauffman went to Paris, where she studied with Andre Lhote and traveled throughout Europe, before returning in 1928 to take up a teaching post at Valparaiso University. Kauffman was hired as a professor of Painting and drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago upon her return and simultaneously worked instructing art at Valparaiso University. Both assignments were part time and in 1933, when she was approached by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), she joined the federal program. During her time with the WPA, Kauffman produced over 50 easel paintings, 25 murals and 7 sculpture projects earning $24.50 per week. Some of her first works for the WPA were murals painted for the Brookfield Zoo, which was under construction at the time. Between 1936 and 1940, Kauffman painted four murals for the cafeteria of the Emil G. Hirsch Metropolitan High School including Amusement Park, Circus, Rodeo, and Stock Show The murals were painted over with house paint, but the outlines of the canvases are visible on the walls and might be able to be restored In 1937, Kauffman painted Incidents in the Life of Luther Burbank for the Luther Burbank School. The following year, she completed a second mural at the school, Circus. The murals at Burbank were still extant in 2001. The playground houses at Oak Park, Illinois, contain Kaufman's bas relief sculptures depicting fairy tales. These included a cast stone relief based on Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen, at the Watts Playground on Hayes Avenue at Division Street; a stone sculpture titled The Cutting of the Cake based on Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, for the Lincoln Playground at Kenilworth Avenue and Fillmore Street; and a cast stone work Captain Flint based on Robert Louis Stevenson's character at the Pyott Playground on Lake Street at Taylor Avenue. She painted murals at the Cook County Children's Hospital, but they were destroyed when the building was demolished, Kauffman created two bas reliefs for the Lincoln Elementary School in Evanston, Illinois. Children in Fruit Tree and Monkeys are intricate wood carvings with three-dimensional style. In addition, she completed commissions at the Washington School in Evanston and the Lowell School in Oak Park, as well as a mural for the Forest Park Public Library. In 1940, Kauffman won the federal commission to paint Preparation for the First County Fair in Ida Grove–1872 for the post office mural in Ida Grove, Iowa. Many great Chicago artists worked for the WPA including Rainey Bennett...

By Mario Perez

Located in Surfside, FL

Mario Segundo Perez Argentine, 1960–2018 Nachimiento Ink on Paper Dimensions: 7.5 X 9.75 with frame. sheet is 5 X 7 Does not appear to be signed on front (not examined out of frame. might be signed verso) Provenance: The Estate of Theodore A Bonin (Ted Bonin was a principal in Alexander and Bonin, a New York gallery known for its diverse slate of conceptual artists. He started at Marlborough gallery London in the 60s, then in partnership with Brooke Alexander. In its stable were a host of esteemed artists: Willie Cole, Rita McBride, John Ahearn, Paul Thek, Doris Salcedo, Eugenio Dittborn, Dalton Paula, and Rigoberto Torres, Mona Hatoum and Emily Jacir.) Mario Pérez was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1960. The second of seven children, and the son of a housepainter. He obtained his degree in Visual Arts at Universidad Nacional de San Juan in Argentina. A draughtsman and painter. His style was magic realist or fantastic realism In 2003, Pérez was the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, one of his greatest achievements. He also had the honor of being part of the National Exhibition “200 Years-200 Masters of Argentinean Art”, commemorating the country’s bicentennial. Mario has won international distinctions such as the Cecilia Grierson Award at the Salón Nacional de Pintura in La Plata in 1992; the Marco A. Roca Award at the Salón Pro-Arte, Córdoba, also in 1992; and the first prize in the LXXXVIII Salón Nacional de Pintura in Buenos Aires in 1999. His art often features tiny figures in immense landscapes, and unique backgrounds. It has elements of Conceptual art. His work has been regularly featured in leading auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York, and private and public collections. The magic realism of Mario Segundo Pérez is characteristic of a chiefly Latin-American concept in painting, literature and film that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into an otherwise realistic scenario. Coined in the 1940s by Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, the term often is used when referring to the Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Influences include Frida Kahlo and George Tooker. He was in shows with Ana Fabry and Eduardo Esquivel. Paintings by Pérez are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (the Buenos Aires City Hall); the University of Miami School of Architecture, and the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University. He has been in shows with Juan Cardenas, Anna Mercedes Hoyos, Ignacio Iturria, Alejandro Obregon, Domingo Ravenet, Arnaldo Roche, Edgar Negret, Fidelio Ponce de Leon, Ricardo Martinez, Damian Gonzalez, Jorge Jimenez Deredia, Victor...

By Théo Tobiasse

Located in Miami, FL

THÉO TOBIASSE (1927–2012) – “LES SIÈCLES COULENT ENTRE NOS RÊVES” Lithograph on Arches Paper ⚜ Hand Signed and Numbered ⚜ Gilt Wood Frame A LUMINOUS MEDITATION ON MEMORY, INTIMACY, AND THE PASSAGE OF TIME From the acclaimed suite Un Chant d’Exil et de Lumière (A Song of Exile and Light), this richly saturated lithograph is one image from a series of six distinct compositions published in 1997 by Klim Art Publisher, Toronto, and printed by master lithographer Pierre Chave at his celebrated atelier in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The multi-color lithographic process, employing up to twenty-three separate color passes, produces the extraordinary depth and chromatic intensity visible across the entire composition. Two figures sit together at a table, each holding a glass of wine. A samovar and two lit candles anchor the still life at center, surrounded by scattered fruit and a bowl bearing an olive branch. A vibrant rainbow canopy arcs across the upper portion of the image, while a dove takes flight at upper right. Behind the couple hangs a decorative tablet adorned with flowering branches and scrolled columns. The title, inscribed in the artist’s hand within the composition, translates as “The centuries flow between our dreams,” a poetic distillation of the suite’s overarching contemplation of generational memory passing through shared moments of intimacy. What initially reads as a warm, intimate gathering reveals itself as a layered reflection on heritage, belonging, and the rituals that connect one generation to the next. The samovar recalls Tobiasse’s Eastern European childhood, while the olive branch and candles carry associations of renewal and hope. The dove and rainbow reinforce themes of peace and covenant that recur throughout Tobiasse’s oeuvre. Rendered on heavy Arches paper with deckled edges, the print retains a tactile, handmade quality that complements its emotional warmth. Presented in a crosshatch gilt wood frame the work suits interiors that embrace color and narrative, from a Mediterranean-inspired living space to a collector’s library or a gallery wall dedicated to the School of Paris tradition. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Suite Provenance – One of six distinct compositions from Tobiasse’s acclaimed Un Chant d’Exil et de Lumière series, published in 1997 ✓ Master Printed – Produced by Pierre Chave in Saint-Paul-de-Vence using up to twenty-three color passes ✓ Hand Signed and Numbered – Pencil signed lower right, numbered 87/199 ✓ Rich Symbolic Composition – Dove, rainbow, samovar, olive branch, and candle layered with personal and cultural meaning ✓ Gilt Wood Frame – Crosshatch gilt finish, ready to display ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: Les Siècles Coulent Entre Nos Rêves (The Centuries Flow Between Our Dreams) ▸ Suite: Un Chant d’Exil et de Lumière (A Song of Exile and Light) ▸ Artist: Théo Tobiasse (1927–2012) ▸ Medium: Lithograph on Arches Paper with Deckled Edges ▸ Year of Creation: 1997 ▸ Signature: Hand Signed Lower Right in Pencil ▸ Edition: 87/199 ▸ Publisher: Klim Art Publisher, Toronto, Canada ▸ Printer: Pierre Chave, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France ▸ Provenance: Michael Hittleman Gallery, Los Angeles ▸ Country of Origin: France ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Area: 30.5 x 22 inches — ◼︎ Paper Size: 36 x 27.25 inches — ◻︎ Frame Size: 44 x 35 x 0.875 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent, commensurate with age ▸ Framing: Crosshatch Gilt Wood Frame, ready to display THE ARTIST: Théo Tobiasse (born Tobias Eidesas, 1927, Jaffa, Israel; died 2012...
