A remarkable intricately designed, handcrafted silver box, circa 1880s.
We were told that this box is sterling silver and that the makers mark "M" is that of "M. Mayer". Maurice MAYER was a very prestigious silversmith. Research shows that he was an "Orfèvre de l'Empereur", Napoleon Bonaparte, 1860-1870.
The Minerva hallmarks are not visible, may have been rubbed off from use and cleaning. No documentation.
This intricately carved box depicts the romantic poem of Le Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose). Comes with the original lock and key.
Le Roman de la Rose, begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230 and completed, in a different style, circa 1270-1280, by Jean de Meun, builds on the concept of courtly love found in the poetry of the troubadours. The authors create a complex allegory of the romance between the Lover and the Rose. In the quest to pick the Rose (to achieve the conquest of love), the flower and its attendants represent the Lady and her sentiments while being wooed.
In the first part of the poem, written by de Lorris, the Lover recounts his dream, ending with the winning of a kiss from the Lady. In the dream, the Lover discovers a walled garden and gains entrance thanks to a beautiful young woman. He meets Diversion and dancers who represent courtly values such as Beauty and Generosity. A tour of the garden brings him to a beautiful bed of roses by the Fountain of Love...

This model was crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with high polished finish. made under the directory presidency of John C. Moore during the art deco period, between 1907-1947. The cellars were designed with classical George III styles, based in the original designs made in London by Dorothy Mills in 1755. As with all Tiffany pieces, the quality and design are beyond compared. Exceptional and rare example of Tiffany's finest work.

Very rare and important piece of the American silversmith history. This fabulous wine ewer was made by the William Gale & Son Company, just five years before the American Civil War (1861-1865) in the 1856. The rich design and the delicate composition reflects the extreme opulence of the northern United States in these period and the degree of sophistication when serving a table.
By other part, this wine ewer is full of symbolisms, where the degree of knowledge and understanding of the characters of Greek and Roman mythology is demonstrated.
This one-of-a-kind piece was carefully crafted with impeccable details in solid .925/.999 sterling silver. It is fully decorated with ancient Etruscan and Greek revival patterns and architectural neo-classic elements, such the small two balusters and the rosettes located in the handle.
The most significant are the two medallions depicting the classical figures of the helmeted & bearded portrait bust of Dionysus and the portrait bust of his daughter Methe, wearing a diadem made of vine leaves.
This rare pitcher has a total weight of 750.43 grams and a measure of 12 by 7.5 inches (30.5 x 19 cm). The base has a diameter of 4.75 inches (12 cm).
Fully stamped in the underneath, with the silver assay hallmarks, the maker's cartouche GS, the year of production 1856 and signed in full, "W. GALE & SON NEW YORK .925 STERLING GS 1856".
Dionysus, (Bacchus for the Romans), was the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and wine, of fertility, orchards and fruit, vegetation, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre in the ancient Greek culture. The iconographic theme on this sheet refer to the legend of the triumph of Dionysus, or as the Romans called him, Bacchus the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, the son of Zeus and Semele. The Bacchanalia was a religious festival in honor of the wine god, Dionysus.
Methe, was the goddess-nymph of drunkenness in the ancient Greek mythology. She was the daughter and companion of the god Dionysus. She was also the wife of Staphylos (bunch of grapes) and mother of Botrys (grapes).
History: The founder of the firm was William Gale (1799-1867) and the company was located in the number 447 at Broome street in New York. W. Gale invented and patented in 1826 a process for making spoons with ornamental patterns by cutting the ornament on rollers, both the upper and the lower rollers being cut with the pattern. this made the production of pattern spoons much less expensive than the former method of hand hammering patterns by the use of dies. Bailey Banks & Biddle is an American jewelry firm that formed in 1832 and quickly became a recognized leader in jewelry fashion. The firm developed a reputation for offering high quality, well-designed jewelry as evidenced by its commissions to design the first 40,000 Purple Hearts for the United States military as well as to create the Naval Academy and West Point class rings. Bailey Biddle & Banks, was originally known as Bailey & Kitchen. Was founded at 136 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, on September 20, 1832, by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen. Fabulous sculptural table pieces, crafted by the renowned American metalsmith artist Mardi Jo Cohen back in the 1990. These pieces has been individually made with Memphis design patterns in solid sterling silver, with high polished finish. This set is composed by 20 pieces divided in 5 sets.
Gemstones: Mounted in bezel settings, with round brilliant cuts gemstones such; five peridots and five pink topaz, with an approximate weight of 12 carats.
Materials: Silver, Lucite, gemstones, Formica and enamel paint.
Weight: Combined of 911.60 Grams, (584.36 Dwt).
Measurements: Average of 30 mm by 174 mm (1.18 x 6.85 Inches).
Hallmarks: Each piece is stamped with the maker's mark and signed, "MARDI JO COHEN 90 STERLING SILVER".
Mardi Jo Cohen born in 1959. Was emerged in 1981, when the Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsass founded a group of artists and designers called Memphis. Bob Dylan’s song 'Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again' was playing on repeat during the group’s first meeting, which led to the group being named 'Memphis'. After the inaugural meeting, the group decided that they would meet again in February 1981. The members brought over 100 drawings with them, picturing a variety of bold, colorful designs with multiple stylistic influences.
