Hunt Slonem is a critically acclaimed American Neo-Expressionist artist. Today, his series of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds are known for their bold and exuberant employment of a Fauvist palette. His painting practice embraces gestural and expressive brushstrokes that depict the ephemeral beauty of nature.
His inspiration and unique style come from spending his time as a young adult in the tropical landscapes of Nicaragua, Mexico, and Hawaii. He developed a strong connection with birds at a young age, which carries on to his art today. Furthermore, the sixty pet birds that live with him in his New York studio and aviary influence his art practice. The constant companionship from birds allows him to capture the rhythm of his immediate surroundings.
Bird with Flowers embodies fantasy and spirituality. The bird blends with the repeated foliage in the background. This effect captures a fleeting moment and creates an optical illusion. Like most of his works, the watercolor highlights the purity and innocence of birds. The vibrant colors of the painting cement Slonem's interest in animals and highlight the repetitive aspects of the artwork. Furthermore, the work captures his interest in repetition and the way it alludes to forms of worship. Reminiscent of mantras, Slonem conveys his view as a passionate animal lover that considers birds sacred.
