My paintings are of animals, plants, and landscapes seen through a moment of shifting focus. I paint the way I explore the rugged mountains by my house, always pushing to see what is over the next hill, searching for the unexpected. I begin my paintings without a plan. No preliminary sketches are made; every thought is worked out directly on the canvas. Artifacts of the creative process can be seen in the rich textures, worked surfaces, and veiled light qualities created by working and reworking the piece. As one image comes into focus another is fading away, retaining a piece of the previous while hinting at what might come next. The result of my search...

'The Wind Whipped Up and They Welcomed Its Offering' - seagulls stand against an abstracted beach scene in this contemporary oil on canvas painting, 'Contemplating Progress II', by artist Diana Tremaine, whose series of paintings that depict abstracted birds and natural elements is called "Navigating Crosscurrents". The 45 x 45 inch painting beautifully bridges abstraction with realism via a calming palette of warmth and layers of paint. Tremaine's dynamic, representational and nature-centric oil paintings reflect a search for truth and meaning. The artist develops brushstrokes and marks by adding and then obliterating some of the story in a free-association editorial process of discovering what is most important and lasting. The melancholy images echo her experiences in an autobiographical fashion, but they are also universal and touch upon and evoke our collective memories like ghosts of what was. Created with a limited palette, there is visual poetry in her surfaces, including the tension that exists when simultaneously holding on and letting go. Diana Tremaine's Artist Statement for this series, 'Navigating Crosscurrents': "I am often taken aback by the might shown by tiny little songbirds managing the winds and rains that at times surround them. In my “Navigating Crosscurrents” series, the birds stand as metaphors for the human experience while the abstraction around them represents the forces - both internal and external, natural and man-made - that act around and within each of us every day. Life is a balancing act – at times breezy and light, at others cacophonous and overwhelming. These images speak metaphorically to the delicate balance and fortitude required as we journey down our respective paths." Biography Creating paintings inspired by western movies and by Remington and Russell, he is a native of the West, having been born and raised in rural Colorado. He studied art at Baylor University in Waco, Texas; at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, and at the University of Colorado, Boulder where he earned a Master's Degree in 1979. For two decades he worked as curator at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana, before leaving in 1999 to begin work as a full-time painter and independent curator. His work is in the collections of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming; the Art Museum of Missoula; and the Yellowstone Art Museum; the Federal Reserve Bank in Helena, Montana; and the Deaconness Medical Center in Billings, Montana. Casey McGlynn grew up in rural Ontario, where he would sit in front of the television and draw on old grocery bags and scrap paper tirelessly, creating self-taught surrealist pop art. McGlynn attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, however, he was not enrolled in the visual arts. Tracy Stuckey received his BFA in painting from Florida State University and his MFA from the University of New Mexico. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows curated by gallery owner Linda Durham and artist Joel Peter Witkin. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently the Professional Development Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. In 2009 he was an artist-in-residence at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah. Also a professor, Stuckey has taught at West Virginia University, and most recently, Colorado State University. Tracy and his wife, artist Erika Osborne, live in Fort Collins, Colorado. "My paintings operate in a fictitious world that utilizes the mythologies and realities of the modern American West. Because of its unique history, the Western United States is more than just a location; it is a label, a persona and most importantly a cultural identity. The word "Western" is a category; it is used to describe films, literature, music, art, and fashion. In my work I use the cowboy and cowgirl and other stereotypical Western themes coupled with pop cultural depictions of the region to reflect my own interpretations of the contemporary West.
