Portrait of Little Boy in Blue titled "Young Gentleman in Blue"
Portrait of Little Boy in Blue titled "Young Gentleman in Blue"

Portrait of Little Boy in Blue titled "Young Gentleman in Blue"

Located in Fredericksburg, VA

Young Gentleman in Blue is a refined American portrait dating to the c. 1830s, a period marked by increasing confidence in both national identity and individual character. Though unsigned, the painting demonstrates the hand of a skilled academic portraitist, evident in the careful modeling of the sitter’s face, the subtle transitions of light across the skin, and the controlled use of color throughout the composition. The young sitter is presented seated and composed, dressed in a deep blue coat accented with brass buttons, a crisp white shirt, and a softly ruffled collar. These elements suggest both social standing and the era’s emphasis on propriety and self-assurance. The artist pays particular attention to the sitter’s expression, which conveys calm introspection rather than overt display. A warm red drapery and architectural column frame the figure, creating a dignified interior setting that was typical of early nineteenth-century portraiture. The restrained palette, balanced composition, and emphasis on character over ornament place this work firmly within the traditions of early American portrait...

Nature morte en rouge et noir (Still-life in Red and Black), 1953

By Claude Venard

Located in Mc Lean, VA

Claude Vénard was born in Paris in 1913 to an established, middle-class family from Bourgogne. Although he was a businessman, his father accepted and supported his devotion to the arts. The blossoming artist was accepted at the prestigious École des Beaux-arts but quickly rejected the formality of traditional academic art training. Instead, Vénard began attending night courses at the École de Arts Appliqués at age seventeen to supplement his independent education. After six years of dedicated study the painter was forced, due to economic difficulties, to withdraw from the school and seek employment. Vénard became a restoration specialist...

Oil Portrait of Woman in Wheat Field

Located in Fredericksburg, VA

This painting is in excellent condition and signed lower right. William Hicok Low first trained with the sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer. When he was 17, he worked in New York City as an illustrator and years later traveled to Paris to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran. During his years in France he summered with the Barbizon artists where he was especially influenced by the work of François Millet. In the United States, he became active as a muralist, illustrator, and decorative painter, performing prominent commissions such as the ceiling murals and decorations of New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. His Beaux Arts classicism inspired Louis Comfort Tiffany and other of his younger colleagues. After 1900, as artistic styles changed, there was less demand for his work but he continued to write art criticism for Scribner's and The Century magazine...
