Floating Bungalow

Beach House by Bestor Architecture in Venice, CA

The ‘floating bungalow’ form emerged from a series of models studying the site- a Venice, CA walk street, which is uniquely defined by the working class bungalows that line it. This house is a modernist contemplation on (and reinterpretation of) those bungalows. The upper floor is a white metal cloud that shrouds the private areas, it appears dreamlike, an abstracted bungalow lifted in the air, allowing an open loft-like public floor to slip underneath. The vertical axis of the house is organized around the stair core that also functions as a heat stack, venting hot air through the electronically operated apertures above. As the core weaves through the house it ultimately punctures the white roof with a black oblong skylight box that appears as an oversized chimney from the street. Openness and transparency between the public rooms, kitchen, dining, living, and the outdoor landscape define the ground floor zones.
