Beachwood Cafe
The Beachwood Café is a remodel of a somewhat decrepit but beloved local coffee shop in Beachwood Canyon, below the Hollywood sign. The new owner asked Bestor Architecture to re-invision the café interior- keeping some of the rusticated woodwork and trestle tables but making it much lighter and contemporary. We thought of the design concept as “Swedish girls who live in Tokyo come back to Sweden to take over their grandfather’s traditional restaurant in the country”. Graphic s, bright high contrast colors, new long benches based on the profile of the lder restaurants ‘dutch country’ style are all pieces of the strategy to reinvgorate yet keep ‘homey’ this local spot. As part of the neighborhood vibe we collaborated with local artists to incorporate psychedelic country wallpaper by Geoff McFetridge that is eerily similar to the fake toile wallpaper that used to define the older establishment.
