Los Angeles Modern

Family Home by Suzanne Rheinstein & Associates in Los Angeles, CA

The owner’s parents built this house on a hillside in the 1950s. A remodel fifty years later kept the wall of windows that overlooks acres of greenery. In its beautiful, private setting there is no need for curtains. The clients have a fine collection of striking Latin American art, which fills the house. One of our serendipitous challenges was to incorporate an inherited Afghani palace kilim into the mix, which turned out to beautifully anchor the colorful art. Our brief was to pull the elements together and create a comfortable and flowing space for the public rooms. We commissioned a colorist to mix a white paint that would work with everything—creating a balance with the paintings, the kilim and the reflected green. Antiques contribute to the distinct character of this house, which perfectly reflect the people who live in it (in a subtle way).
