An exceptional and visually arresting set of twelve early playing cards, dating to the late 16th century and originating from Austria. Executed in traditional woodblock print and delicately hand-painted, this rare group beautifully reflects the transition from the Late Gothic period into the Early Renaissance in Central Europe. Each card displays remarkable period detail, particularly in the finely rendered court figures dressed in late 15th-century attire- short doublets and jerkins, tight hose, puffed and slashed sleeves, feathered caps, and stylized armor elements. The costumes embody the expressive elegance of Late Gothic fashion while hinting at the emerging Renaissance aesthetic north of the Alps. The surviving hand-coloring- earthy reds, deep blues, muted greens, and warm ochres- enhances the strong linear quality of the woodcut technique. The natural wear, surface patina, and scattered losses visible in the images attest to the cards’ age and authentic use, adding to their historical character and collectible appeal. This is a good and complete English handmade wood "weighted" chess set game of 32 pieces, in its original box with a sliding lid, made by John Jaques of London and dating to the mid 20th century period. The chess pieces are made of turned and carved varnished wood. The bases of ALL pieces are weighted with metal pieces and the bases have a green felt/paper cover. Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing. The pieces in the set are in the Staunton style. "Oblique Strategies" by Brian Eno & Peter Schmidt - Peter Norton Christmas Gift This piece is from a series of Christmas gifts, given yearly by Peter Norton and his family. This one is from 1996. The white container is Corian, with a solid weight and feel. Within, there are bright and whimsical cards, each congaing a strategy or inspiration for thinking creatively. In 1970, Peter Schmidt created "The Thoughts Behind the Thoughts", a box containing 55 sentences letterpress printed onto disused prints that accumulated in his studio, which is still in Eno's possession. Eno, who had known Schmidt since the late 1960s, had been pursuing a similar project himself, which he had handwritten onto a number of bamboo cards and given the name "Oblique Strategies" in 1974. There was a significant overlap between the two projects, and so, in late 1974, Schmidt and Eno combined them into a single pack of cards and offered them for general sale. The set went through three limited edition printings before Schmidt suddenly died in early 1980. Sixteen years later software pioneer Peter Norton convinced Eno to let him create a fourth edition as Christmas gifts for his friends. He is best known for the computer programs and books that bear his name and portrait. Norton established his family foundation with his former wife Eileen Norton in 1989. For more than two decades, the Peter Norton Family commissioned annual limited edition artworks to give to friends, colleagues, and museums during the holidays. The “Christmas Projects” evolved from modest prints created in small runs to complexly fabricated objects and editions up to 5,000—with all those gift labels reportedly printed personally by Peter Norton. Each year’s artwork was always a surprise, as was the recipient list. Brian Peter George Eno (b. 1948) is an English musician, songwriter, record producer and visual artist. He is best known for his pioneering contributions to ambient music and electronica, and for producing, recording, and writing works in rock and pop music. Peter Schmidt (1931 - 1980) was a Berlin-born British artist, painter, theoretician of color and composition, pioneering multimedia exhibitor and an influential teacher at Watford College of Art. He was part of a generation of art school teachers in the 1960s and 1970s who had great impact on some students who later went on to work in art and music. He worked with Hansjörg Mayer, Brian Eno, Mark Boyle, Dieter Roth and had associations with Russell Mills...

Backgammon is a very old strategic board game, from which its origin is still undefined. A true Classic game about tactics and luck played around the globe. Taking this Classic as inspiration, Orfeo collaboration joined skills to create a board game with stimulating materials and astounding chips. Shined a spotlight on to the raw materials used to create it. The exterior of the board is composed of two elements, a metalic box and a thinly sliced oyster cut veneer of parota wood. The oysters are sourced from reclaimed branches of these gigantic trees; a material that is commonly discarded as fire wood given the difficulties of processing it. Underneath the wood they have used a single sheet of meticulously oxidized metal that is laser cut to size, then assembled into a box by one of their master craftsmen. Opening the chest you’ll find a treasure of glass checkers and dice handmade by Orfeo Quagliata’s artisans. Orfeo takes his most interesting glass techniques to apply them to all the chips in the game. The checkers are manufactured in two different processes. The "Barcodes" technique is a fine linear design with schemes of different colors that contrast between one competitor and another. Thin strips of different colored glass are placed next to each other and then fused into a single piece, from which circular pieces are drilled, ground and hand polished to form the chip. The more sober and bitone "Roarshax" technique presents an electrifying texture on the top of a transparent body. Meanwhile the dice are solid glass cubes...
